SBI Clerk eligibility is not one yes-or-no test. You can meet the degree rule yet choose the wrong State or Union Territory, miss the official application window, misunderstand local-language proof, or assume prelim marks decide final merit. This guide follows each gate from application to final selection using SBI's 2026-27 notice. Explore Banking & Insurance Exam Preparation for related study routes.
1. SBI Clerk eligibility at a glance
SBI calls the post Junior Associate (Customer Support & Sales). The official SBI 2026-27 Junior Associates notification, Advertisement No. CRPD/CR/2026-27/17 dated 11 August 2026, sets these values.
Gate | Requirement in that notice |
|---|---|
Citizenship | Indian citizen |
Age | 20 to 28 on 1 April 2026, with an inclusive birth window of 2 April 1998 to 1 April 2006 |
Qualification | Graduation in any discipline, or recognised equivalent, by 31 December 2026 |
Location | Apply for one State or UT only |
Language | Proficiency in the selected local language |
Final-year candidates needed proof of passing by 31 December 2026. SBI listed applications from 11 August to 31 August 2026.
2. Worked eligibility checks at the boundaries
Candidate A: born 2 April 1998, degree certificate dated 30 December 2026, general category, no relaxation. Both gates pass. The birth date equals the earliest inclusive date; degree proof precedes the deadline by one day.
Candidate B: born 1 April 1998, graduation completed 30 December 2026, general category. The degree passes, but the birth date predates SBI's window by one day, so unrelaxed age fails.
Candidate C: born 1 April 2006, final result posted 2 January 2027. Age passes, but the result misses the notice's 31 December 2026 qualification date. Provisional status cannot rescue it.
Category claimed | Upper-age relaxation in the 2026-27 notice |
|---|---|
OBC | 3 years |
SC/ST | 5 years |
PwBD General/EWS | 10 years |
PwBD OBC | 13 years |
PwBD SC/ST | 15 years |
Certificates are required, with no cumulative relaxation. Use SBI's exact table for ex-servicemen, widowed or divorced women, and trained apprentices.
3. State or UT choice and the local-language gate
Under the 2026-27 notice, a candidate could apply for vacancies in only one State or UT and had to choose one listed local language while applying. The candidate must be able to read, write, speak and understand it. This opted language is not the same thing as the medium available for the online examination.
A Class 10 or Class 12 mark sheet or certificate showing study of that specified language provides exemption from the Local Language Proficiency Test. Otherwise, a provisionally selected candidate must take the test after clearing the selection stages and before joining. Failure means no appointment. Use SBI Clerk Eligibility: Graduation and Local Language for the deeper evidence check.
4. SBI Clerk selection process from prelims to joining
The 2026-27 notice gives this flow: Phase I prelims, Phase II mains, State-wise and category-wise merit from the mains aggregate, language testing if not exempt, eligibility and application verification, then final selection. There is no interview.
Phase I prelims section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
A wrong answer loses one-fourth of its assigned mark. The notice expected approximately 10 times the vacancies, subject to availability, to be shortlisted by aggregate prelim score.
Phase II mains section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
General/Financial Awareness | 50 | 50 | 35 minutes |
General English | 40 | 40 | 35 minutes |
Quantitative Aptitude | 50 | 50 | 45 minutes |
Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude | 50 | 60 | 45 minutes |
Total | 190 | 200 | 160 minutes |

5. How scoring affects shortlisting and final merit
Illustrative prelim attempt: 60 correct, 20 wrong and 20 unattempted out of 100, at 1 mark each. Before official processing, raw score is 60 - (20 x 0.25) = 60 - 5 = 55. Unattempted questions add and lose 0. This does not establish shortlisting because SBI uses the ranked pool.
For a non-apprentice with illustrative 72/100 in prelims and 128/200 in mains, final-merit input is 128, not 72 + 128 = 200. The 2026-27 notice excludes prelim marks and uses the mains aggregate for provisional selection. A 128 does not prove selection because State, category and official minimums still matter.
Eligible trained SBI apprentices meeting the notice's conditions are the narrow exception: 2.5% of 200 = 5 marks. Ordinary candidates do not receive it. Prelims still reward accurate, timed attempts, so use SBI Clerk Reasoning: A Six-Week Timed Prep Route, although prelim marks do not enter final merit.
6. Documents and final checks before treating yourself as eligible
Prepare evidence before relying on an eligibility claim:
Date-of-birth proof matching the application
Graduation mark sheet, provisional certificate, or authorised result-posting certificate by the notice's qualification date
Class 10 or 12 language evidence, or readiness for the language test
Category, disability, or relaxation certificate in the prescribed format where claimed
Consistent identity details across the form and documents
Passing a stage does not cure an eligibility mismatch. The 2026-27 notice subjects final selection to verification of eligibility and online application information, plus the language test where applicable.
