SBI SO Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme: Post-Wise Routes Explained

There is no single SBI SO paper pattern. Use this guide to identify your post's route, understand qualifying and merit components, and build a timetable from the official notice.

Search for an SBI SO pattern and you may find one generic prelims-and-mains table. SBI recruits Specialist Cadre Officers through post-specific routes. This guide works through two official patterns. Your current post-specific notice outranks every older article, coaching table, SBI PO pattern and IBPS SO pattern.

SBI SO is a recruitment family, not one fixed paper

There is no universal yes to “Does SBI SO have prelims and mains?” Use the stages in your exact advertisement.

SBI's CRPD/SCO/2026-27/12 specified shortlisting and a 100-mark interview for Manager (Manpower Planning & Recruitment) and Manager (Learning & Development), with merit based only on interview marks. CRPD/SCO/2026-27/02 specified a written test plus interview for Assistant Manager (Law) and Deputy Manager (Law).

CRPD/SCO/2024-25/15 assigned five Deputy Manager (Systems) posts to shortlisting plus interaction, but Assistant Manager (System) to an online test plus interaction. The SBI PO prelims, mains and final-stage preparation plan is a separate pattern, not an SBI SO template.

Find your actual pattern in five boxes

Open SBI's official Careers current openings page, find your advertisement PDF and copy:

  1. Exact post and grade

  2. Selection procedure

  3. Test names, questions and time

  4. Qualifying-only and merit-bearing components

  5. Negative marking and final-stage weightage

Do not stop at “Specialist Cadre Officer”. CRPD/SCO/2024-25/15 shows that the headline may not identify your paper.

A decision tree titled "Which SBI SO pattern applies?" begins with "Exact post + advertisement number"; Branch A, "CRPD/SCO/2026-27/12, Manager (Manpower Planning & Recruitment) or Manager (Learning & Development)" → "Shortlisting" → "Interview: 100 marks" → "Final merit: 100% interview"; Branch B, "CRPD/SCO/2026-27/02, Assistant Manager (Law) or Deputy Manager (Law)" → "Objective: Reasoning 25 questions/25 marks + English 35/35, qualifying, combined 45 minutes; Professional Knowledge 50/50, 45 minutes" → "Descriptive: answer 5 of 8, 10 marks each, 50 marks, 45 minutes; no negative marks" → "Interview: 100 marks" → "Final weightage: written 70%, interview 30%"; Branch C, "CRPD/SCO/2024-25/15, Assistant Manager (System)" → "Reasoning 15/15 + Quantitative Aptitude 15/15 + English 20/20, qualifying, combined 45 minutes; General IT Knowledge 60 questions/100 marks, 75 minutes; no negative marks" → "Interaction: 25 marks" → "Final weightage: written 70%, interaction 30%"; red caution, "Do not transfer counts, penalties or weightage from one branch to another.".

The notice specified no negative marks. Its indicative IT split was Software Development 20 questions/33 marks, Infra Support 20/33, Networking 10/17 and Cloud Operations 10/17.

Assume the Bank-declared thresholds are met. Reasoning 12/15, Quantitative Aptitude 10/15 and English 16/20 total 12 + 10 + 16 = 38, but these qualifying marks do not enter merit.

General IT Knowledge 72/100 and interaction 18/25 receive the notice's 70:30 weightage:

  • Written: 72/100 × 70 = 50.4

  • Interaction: 18/25 × 30 = 21.6

  • Combined: 50.4 + 21.6 = 72.0/100

SBI's declared normalisation and tie rules govern the real list. Prioritise IT without neglecting aptitude. The IBPS SO IT Mains Preparation Course offers overlapping IT Professional Knowledge practice, not SBI pattern authority.

Worked pattern: Assistant Manager and Deputy Manager (Law)

CRPD/SCO/2026-27/02 specified:

  • Reasoning 25 questions/25 marks and English 35/35 were qualifying tests sharing 45 minutes.

  • Professional Knowledge had 50 questions/50 marks in 45 minutes.

  • The descriptive test required any 5 of 8 answers, each worth 10 marks, for 50 marks in 45 minutes.

The notice specified no negative marks and required candidates to qualify objective and descriptive tests individually. The 60 General Aptitude marks were qualifying only. Written merit combined Professional Knowledge and descriptive marks, with final weightage of written test 70% and the 100-mark interview 30%.

Assume all thresholds are met. Professional Knowledge 38/50 plus descriptive 32/50 gives written 70/100. With interview 76/100:

(70 × 0.70) + (76 × 0.30) = 49 + 22.8 = 71.8/100

Do not transfer this descriptive component to another advertisement unless it prints one.

Marking scheme: three checks that prevent bad estimates

  1. Read the negative-marking sentence. The Systems and Law notices cited here specified no negative marks, but this is not a permanent SBI SO promise. CRPD/SCO/2026-27/12 specified no written test, so an objective penalty is not applicable.

  2. Separate qualifying from merit marks. The Systems route excludes 50 General Aptitude marks from IT merit. The Law route excludes 60 General Aptitude marks from Professional Knowledge plus descriptive merit.

  3. Keep comparisons separate. The IBPS SO exam pattern and Professional Knowledge strategy helps comparison, but IBPS rules cannot decide an SBI notice's stages, penalty or weightage.

Convert the notification into a realistic 10-hour week

For Assistant Manager (System), divide 600 minutes into:

  • 300 for IT: Software Development 100, Infra Support 100, Networking 50 and Cloud Operations 50, matching the 20:20:10:10 question mix

  • 90 for qualifying aptitude

  • 120 for one full-pattern simulation

  • 90 for error review

Use the IBPS SO IT Prelims Preparation Course only for English, reasoning and quantitative-aptitude overlap.

For a CRPD/SCO/2026-27/12 interview route, use 240 minutes on role knowledge and recent work, 180 converting CV claims into evidence-led examples, 120 on banking-domain cases and 60 on a recorded mock interview. Do not prepare for a fictional CBT.

Change the timetable whenever a notice changes a section, duration or route.

Short version: copy these facts before preparation starts

Screenshot this checklist:

  • Advertisement number and exact post

  • Selection route and section names

  • Questions, marks, section and total time

  • Qualifying and merit components

  • Negative-marking sentence

  • Interview or interaction marks and final weightage

  • Cutoff, left blank until SBI declares it

SBI SO has post-wise selection patterns, so expect only what your current official notice specifies. Use the SBI exam resources and choose courses only for genuine aptitude or IT overlap.
