RRB NTPC Eligibility: Graduate vs Undergraduate Posts, Skills and Medical Fit

Use a condition-by-condition method to shortlist RRB NTPC posts. Dated 2024 examples show how education, age, skill tests and medical codes change the answer.

Clearing the education label does not show every RRB NTPC post you can choose. Qualification, result date, age on the reference date, skill test and medical standard are five separate gates, and passing four of them still leaves you out of the post you wanted. The two closed 2024 notices, CEN 06/2024 undergraduate and CEN 05/2024 graduate, show how the gates interact.

RRB NTPC eligibility begins with two notification levels

Notification level

Minimum education

Posts advertised

Post-CBT tests in that notice

CEN 06/2024 undergraduate

Class 12 (+2) or equivalent

4

Typing test on 2 of the 4

CEN 05/2024 graduate

Recognised university degree or equivalent

5

CBAT on 1, typing test on 2 of the 5

"Undergraduate post" names the minimum qualification, not the candidate's college status. A working graduate can sit in that band, and a Class 11 student cannot.

The post list and the wording of each qualification clause are reset by every Centralised Employment Notice, or CEN, so the live decision belongs to the newest CEN and its corrigenda on the official centralised RRB portal. RRB NTPC Eligibility and Exam Pattern maps these two bands onto the full selection chain.

RRB NTPC undergraduate eligibility opened four dated post routes

CEN 06/2024 carried four undergraduate posts, with the skill test and medical standard attached post by post, not to the band:

Post

Education rule

Extra skill test

Medical standard

Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk

Class 12 (+2) or equivalent

None

B-2

Accounts Clerk Cum Typist

Class 12 (+2) or equivalent

Typing

C-2

Junior Clerk Cum Typist

Class 12 (+2) or equivalent

Typing

C-2

Trains Clerk

Class 12 (+2) or equivalent

None

A-3

That notice set a 50% aggregate floor at Class 12, waived for SC, ST, PwBD, ex-servicemen and anyone already holding a higher qualification. The benchmark behind the two Typist rows was 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi.

Meera: UR, Class 12 at 64%, no degree, born 15 August 2002, English typing 28 WPM. On 1 January 2025 she was 22 years, 4 months, 17 days old, so 64 - 50 = 14 points above the aggregate floor and 30 - 28 = 2 WPM short of the benchmark. Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk and Trains Clerk stayed open subject to medical fitness; both Typist rows closed on the typing gap alone.

RRB NTPC graduate eligibility opened five dated post routes

CEN 05/2024 carried five graduate posts, and the test attached after CBT 2 is what separated them:

Post

Minimum education

Extra test after CBT 2

Medical standard

Chief Commercial Cum Ticket Supervisor

Degree

None

B-2

Station Master

Degree

CBAT

A-2

Goods Train Manager

Degree

None

A-2

Junior Account Assistant Cum Typist

Degree plus typing proficiency

TST

C-2

Senior Clerk Cum Typist

Degree plus typing proficiency

TST

C-2

A "None" in that column means no skill or aptitude test after CBT 2; document verification and the medical still applied. The degree had to be complete by the closing date, so a candidate awaiting a result was out however well the CBTs had gone.

Arjun: BSc result declared 30 June 2024, Class 12 at 47%, born 10 April 1998, English typing 32 WPM. On 1 January 2025 he was 26 years, 8 months, 22 days old, and the completed degree opened all five graduate rows. His Class 12 aggregate sat 50 - 47 = 3 points below the undergraduate floor, but the higher-qualification waiver covered him, so that band stayed open too. Typing at 32 - 30 = 2 WPM above the benchmark cleared both typist routes.

Can a graduate apply for RRB NTPC undergraduate posts?

Yes, when the undergraduate notice in force includes that candidate and every condition passes. A degree widens the post list and waives nothing else; in 2024 the undergraduate band carried the narrower age window of the two.

Ravi had 72% in Class 12 and his degree result came on 22 October 2024. CEN 05/2024's extended deadline for the qualification was 20 October, leaving him 22 - 20 = 2 calendar days late, and that one date closed the graduate band. CEN 06/2024 closed on 27 October and asked only for Class 12, where his 72 - 50 = 22 point margin cleared the floor comfortably.

Test each notice independently, because one fail on a mandatory condition ends that route. A CBT 1 admit card settles nothing either: qualification, category and medical records are examined later.

RRB NTPC post fit depends on skill tests and medical standards

Across the two notices only Station Master carried CBAT; typing carried the four Typist or Assistant Cum Typist rows, two in each band, and the remaining four posts ran from CBT 2 straight to verification.

The codes group cleanly: A-2 for Station Master and Goods Train Manager, A-3 for Trains Clerk, B-2 for the two commercial and ticketing rows, C-2 for the four clerical and typist rows. Train-movement and station-safety work drew the A codes, counter-facing commercial work B-2, desk-bound clerical work C-2.

Neha has a degree, types 32 WPM in English, and will sit a typing test but not CBAT. Station Master leaves her list, since CBAT decides that post. Both graduate typist rows stay, pending the C-2 medical, and Chief Commercial Cum Ticket Supervisor and Goods Train Manager stay only if she can meet B-2 and A-2. Ruling out CBAT is a preference she is exercising, not a disqualification anyone has issued.

Two-column decision tree comparing Meera, a Class 12 candidate routed to four undergraduate posts, with Arjun, a graduate routed to five graduate posts and their typing, CBAT and medical codes.

RRB NTPC age and document dates are notice-specific traps

Age is read on the notice's reference date, not the day you apply, and one day of birth can decide it. Born 2 January 2007, a candidate is 17 years, 11 months, 30 days old on 1 January 2025 and misses an 18-year floor; born 1 January 2007, exactly 18 and clear.

The 2024 windows were 18 to 36 for the graduate band and 18 to 33 for the undergraduate band, both already including a one-time three-year relaxation, so a window remembered from an older recruitment misleads. SSC CGL Eligibility 2026: Age, Attempts, Education applies the same check to a different post list.

RRB NTPC post preferences come before the preparation plan

Fill one row per condition before ranking anything, and never let a blank become an assumed yes:

  1. CEN and level: notice number, undergraduate or graduate band

  2. Qualification: date completed, against that notice's closing date

  3. Age: completed years on the reference date, not the application date

  4. Category: relaxation claimed, plus the certificate format and date behind it

  5. Post and medical code: the code printed against each post you list

  6. Extra test: typing, CBAT or none, per post

  7. Preference: your ranking of the posts that survived the six rows above

Every row needs a source or a decision beside it. SSC CGL Posts Explained: How to Set Your Preference Order works the ranking half on a longer post list.

Study time follows the shortlist: in a 10-hour week, 4 hours Mathematics, 3 General Intelligence and Reasoning, 2 General Awareness and 1 reviewing errors from mixed tests. Those proportions follow where marks are usually lost, not any published weightage. The Railway exam preparation courses page carries the subject material.

RRB NTPC eligibility in the short version, then the next step

Open the notice in force. Prove the qualification was complete by its closing date, compute age on its reference date, then filter the post list by extra test and medical code. Rank only what survives. A degree widens the routes and waives nothing else.

Once the shortlist is confirmed against the current notice, the RRB NTPC Complete Preparation Course organises CBT 1 and CBT 2 preparation stage by stage.
