EMRS Teacher Selection Process: Tier-wise Weightage and Verification

Passing screening, earning merit marks and proving eligibility are separate tasks. Follow the PGT/TGT stage map with worked score examples and a practical document checklist.

Passing a screening paper, earning final merit marks and proving eligibility are different steps in EMRS teacher selection. Confusing them can leave your preparation focused on the wrong score. This PGT/TGT map uses the NESTS ESSE-2025 bulletin, with Computer Science examples where useful; check the notices for your own post and recruitment cycle before acting on any selection rule below.

Source note: Every official mark, ratio and minimum below comes from the NESTS ESSE-2025 information bulletin; later cycles may change them. Check the NESTS ESSE-2025 recruitment notices on nests.tribal.gov.in for amendments and post-specific instructions. Worked illustrations are labelled separately.

Identify your EMRS post before mapping selection

EMRS means Eklavya Model Residential Schools. NESTS, the National Education Society for Tribal Students, is the recruiting authority. This guide covers Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) and Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT); check which subjects are advertised under your chosen post.

The sequence is eligibility/application → Tier I screening and language qualification → Tier II subject examination → document verification and an eligible merit panel. Screening controls progression, Tier II supplies merit marks, and verification establishes eligibility.

Place this within your government teaching exam preparation, but keep post rules separate. Principal selection has separate interview provisions; its formula does not apply to PGT/TGT selection.

Read Tier I weightage without confusing pedagogy with subject marks

The PGT screening allocation is:

Component

Marks

General Awareness

10

Reasoning Ability

15

ICT

15

Teaching Aptitude

30

Domain Knowledge: experiential activity/case-based pedagogy

20

Domain Knowledge: NEP-2020

10

Parts I–V total

100

Each question carries one mark. Duration is 2 hours 30 minutes, without separate part-wise limits. The bulletin's objective marking scheme deducts 1/3 mark per incorrect answer; unanswered questions earn zero.

Worked interpretation: Teaching Aptitude plus experiential pedagogy gives 30 + 20 = 50 of 100 screening marks. NEP adds another 10. PGT Part V's “Domain Knowledge” label therefore does not mean 30 marks of Computer Science. ICT is also distinct from the full subject syllabus.

TGT has the same headline allocations, but its accompanying note describes Part V as subject-specific and Part VI as option-dependent. Do not assume identical PGT/TGT content. Both have a separate language component outside the 100 marks; Tier II shortlisting uses Tier I performance excluding Part VI.

Treat language competency as a separate qualifying gate

PGT language competency covers English and Hindi, worth 10 marks each, with an aggregate qualifying requirement of 8/20. TGT adds the chosen regional language: three components of 10 marks each, with an aggregate requirement of 12/30. These are combined thresholds, not separate pass marks for each language.

Worked illustration using hypothetical section scores: Candidate A calculates 75/100 in PGT Parts I–V but gets 7/20 in language. Because 7 is below 8, Parts I–V are not evaluated under the language rule. Candidate B calculates 65/100 and gets 8/20, clearing language.

Candidate B still needs competitive shortlisting. Clearing a minimum gate does not establish a cutoff, and language marks do not become final merit marks.

See where subject knowledge determines merit

PGT/TGT Tier II contains 40 objective questions worth 40 marks and 15 descriptive questions worth 60 marks: 55 questions, 100 marks and 3 hours. Merit lists use Tier II performance only.

Worked illustration: Suppose a candidate receives an awarded objective score of 28/40 and descriptive score of 42/60. The Tier II total is 28 + 42 = 70/100. These are awarded marks after applicable deductions, not counts of correct answers.

An earlier Tier I score of 75 is not added to produce 145, and there is no 50:50 average of the tiers. The merit score in this example remains 70.

Descriptive work contributes 60 ÷ 100 × 100 = 60% of Tier II marks despite accounting for only 15 of 55 questions. Use the EMRS Tier 1 versus Tier 2 preparation guide to plan subject practice. For Computer Science, practise writing complete explanations alongside solving objective questions.

Separate shortlisting ratios from a guaranteed appointment

The notified ratios are 1:10 for Tier II shortlisting against vacancies and 1:3 for document-verification calls for posts other than Principal/JSA. Actual lists follow the post/category process and subsequent notices.

Simplified illustration: With 10 hypothetical vacancies, 10 × 10 = 100 Tier II shortlist places and 10 × 3 = 30 verification calls. These are neither actual vacancy counts nor guarantees of exact list sizes.

Tier II minimums are 30% for General/OBC/EWS and 25% for SC/ST/PwBD. On a 100-mark paper, the arithmetic is 30/100 × 100 = 30 marks and 25/100 × 100 = 25 marks. These floors neither establish the competitive cutoff nor override the language gate.

Prepare evidence for verification, not just an exam score

Keep the application confirmation printout and supporting certificates ready. As applicable, these cover age, qualifications, experience, category/non-creamy-layer status, disability and EWS. Follow instructions for originals and self-attested copies. An admit card permits exam attendance; it is not a final eligibility decision.

Document-check example: Your application lists a qualifying degree and claims OBC-NCL reservation. Your folder must substantiate both claims under the notice's qualification and certificate requirements. A high Tier II score cannot repair missing eligibility evidence.

Computer Science applicants can use the EMRS Computer Science eligibility checklist to organise this check. Match each application claim to its evidence, then follow your official verification call and subsequent appointment instructions. Verification does not add marks to the merit score.

Turn the stage map into this week's practice

Illustrative 10-hour week: Allocate 4 hours to subject objective/descriptive work, 3 to teaching aptitude/experiential pedagogy/NEP, 2 to general awareness/reasoning/ICT and 1 to language. That is 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 hours, not official weightage. Adjust after a timed diagnostic, especially when language falls below its qualifying requirement.

Save the correct post's bulletin, record language performance separately and maintain a Tier II score sheet. The EMRS Computer Science preparation bundle is an optional structured route for Tier 1 and Tier 2 preparation. Check the NESTS recruitment notices for amendments before finalising your plan.
