SSC CGL Previous Year Paper Analysis: Topic-wise Question Distribution in Tier 1

We counted topic recurrence across our question bank built from SSC CGL previous year papers. Section by section, here is which Tier 1 topics repeat the most in quant, reasoning, English and General Awareness, and the study order that follows from the data.

Every serious SSC CGL aspirant is told to analyse previous year papers. Very few ever do it with actual counts. So we did the counting. Our published question bank now holds over 22,000 questions across the four Tier 1 subjects, compiled from previous year papers of SSC CGL and comparable government exams, and the topic-wise density inside it is a direct record of which topics setters keep returning to.

This post reads that distribution section by section and turns each section into a study order, so your first weeks of preparation go to the topics the paper actually rewards.

SSC CGL Tier 1 sections: the frame for this analysis

Tier 1 tests four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension, and General Awareness. Two honesty notes before the numbers. First, the exact question counts, marks, duration and negative marking for the current cycle belong to the official notification at ssc.gov.in; confirm the pattern there. Second, the figures below are published questions in our own bank, built from previous year papers of SSC CGL and similar exams. Read them as recurrence density, a signal of what examiners reach for, not as an official weightage table.

SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude: what the papers keep asking

Aggregating our published bank for the aptitude subject, the densest CGL-relevant topics look like this:

Behind these headline topics sits a steady middle band: Time and Work (about 280 questions), Simple and Compound Interest (about 270), HCF and LCM (about 270), Average (about 260), Ratio and Proportion (about 250), and Trigonometry (over 120).

The study order that follows from the data: begin with percentage and ratio, because profit and loss, interest, averages and most DI sets are restatements of those two ideas. Then take the arithmetic word-problem block (time and work, then speed, time and distance). Finish with the advanced maths block (algebra, geometry and mensuration, trigonometry), which is where CGL separates itself from easier SSC papers. Keep one DI set in every practice session from week one; it is the densest single topic in our quant data.

SSC CGL Reasoning: the repeat offenders

The reasoning section shows the most lopsided distribution of the four:

  • Series (number and letter): about 740 questions, the heaviest reasoning topic in the bank.

  • Coding-decoding: over 530.

  • Seating arrangements: over 430, and puzzles add nearly 290 more.

  • Non-verbal and spatial reasoning: nearly 400 (mirror images, paper folding, figure series).

  • Blood relations (about 360), directions (over 310), syllogisms (about 285), analogy (about 240).

  • Smaller but reliable: Venn diagrams, cubes and dice, calendar and clock questions.

Study order: start with the pattern topics, series, coding-decoding and analogy, because they dominate the density and reward daily drilling fast. Next the rule topics: blood relations, directions, syllogisms and Venn diagrams, where one learned method settles every question. Keep non-verbal practice as a small daily dose. Save long seating arrangements and puzzles for last; they cost the most time per mark in a speed-bound paper.

SSC CGL English Comprehension: vocabulary is the headline

English carries the single densest topic in our entire four-subject dataset: vocabulary, at nearly 1,300 published questions covering synonyms, antonyms, idioms and one-word substitutions. Reading comprehension follows at about 1,100.

The rest of the section splits into two clusters. Applied grammar tasks: sentence correction (over 510), sentence completion (about 500), para jumbles (about 360) and cloze tests (over 220). And the underlying grammar rules the correction questions test: prepositions (about 240), tenses (about 190), direct and indirect speech (about 150), articles and subject-verb agreement (about 140 each), and voice (over 100).

Study order: make vocabulary a daily 20-minute habit from day one, because no cramming week can cover a topic this large. Run the grammar rules cluster next, since error-spotting and fill-in-the-blank questions are just those rules in disguise. Then move to timed reading comprehension and cloze practice, and treat para jumbles as a technique to learn, not content to memorise.

SSC CGL General Awareness: static outweighs the news

The GA distribution corrects a common belief that this section is mostly current affairs:

  • Current affairs: about 530 questions.

  • Static GK (about 490) plus state-wise GK (about 420): together well ahead of current affairs.

  • The subject spine: geography (about 350), history (about 330), polity (about 290), Indian economy (about 190).

  • General science: biology (about 150), physics (over 110), chemistry (about 80).

Study order: build the static spine first, polity, history and geography, because it never expires and dominates the density. Cover general science at school level, with biology first. Run current affairs as a rolling monthly habit rather than a final-month panic. GA is also the speed section: there is nothing to calculate, so every fast mark here buys you time for quant.

Turning the distribution into one working plan

Put the four study orders together and a clear weekly shape emerges: a daily vocabulary and current-affairs habit, a reasoning drill block front-loaded with series and coding-decoding, quant built from percentage and ratio outward, and static GK layered in from the start.
