Coal India can trip a computer graduate on one word. Advertisement 03/2026 named no Computer Science discipline: the computer post was called System, and in CIL's notice CS means Company Secretary. Eligibility therefore turns on five checks: route, post code, printed degree title, study mode, and marks under the category rule. Syllabus similarity, a GATE CS score or a coaching label cannot create official equivalence.
1. Pick the Coal India MT route before matching your degree
Two Coal India notices dated 5 May 2026 show why the route comes first. Advertisement 03/2026 ran through a CBT and listed System, code 14. Advertisement 01/2026 ran on GATE-2025 and listed only Mining, code 10, against paper MN. A GATE CS score could not open a System seat there.
So before you compare any degree, write down three things about the notice you are actually applying against:
The advertisement number and its date. Two 2026 notices carried different discipline lists.
The discipline and post code you are claiming, in the notice's wording, not your degree's branch name.
The selection input for that route: a CBT sitting, or one named GATE paper and year.
All three can change between cycles. Use the Coal India MT category page to find the current recruitment, then read the live notice with its FAQ and any addendum before trusting a discipline name from last year.
2. Map the exact qualification row in Advertisement 03/2026
Advertisement 03/2026 listed nine disciplines. The qualification row, not the discipline name, is what decides whether your degree counts:

Keep First Class for System, then apply the category marks note separately. Listed-company experience was a Company Secretary preference, never a System shortcut. The DSSSB TGT Computer Science eligibility guide shows recruiter-specific CS rules. Do not import its list into CIL.
3. Work five candidate files through the mapping

A, B and C clear the qualification row only. Each still faces the rest of the notice: the age limit on the stated cut-off date, the application deadline, and document verification.
4. Apply the marks and category rule without rounding
Advertisement 03/2026 set 60% for UR, OBC-NCL and EWS, and 55% after relaxation for SC, ST and PwBD.
For SC, regular BTech Civil Engineering at 57.00% gives 57.00 >= 55.00, so the marks floor is met and the SC certificate must be in the notice's current format. For EWS, the same degree at 59.99% gives 59.99 < 60.00 and fails. With CGPA or GPA, supply the university's conversion certificate or the formula printed on the marksheet. 5. Check study mode, result status and the later addendum
Advertisement 03/2026 required the listed BE, BTech, BSc (Engineering), MCA, MSc and MTech qualifications to be recognised and regular full-time. Its 11 May 2026 FAQ barred part-time, online, correspondence and ODL study for the technical disciplines, while allowing ODL for Hindi only.
The 10 June 2026 addendum amended Note 2(b), adding Company Secretary to those non-technical modes when recognised for Central Government employment. Here, CS means Company Secretary, not Computer Science.
Result status was time-boxed to the cycle. Final-year, semester or trimester candidates in academic year 2025-26 could apply if they expected results by 31 August 2026 and supplied every marksheet through the latest completed term. That deadline belonged to Advertisement 03/2026; a later notice sets its own.
6. Handle combined branches and unfamiliar specialisations safely
For a combined Civil degree, Civil or Civil Engineering had to precede the combination. Electrical and Mechanical used the same rule. E&T named Electronics and Telecommunication, Electronics and Communication, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, and Electronics Instrumentation and Control Engineering. Industrial Engineering had four combinations: with Management, with Production Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, and with Operation Research.
System had no parallel list. For CSE (Cyber Security), AI and Data Science, Software Engineering or Information Science, match the certificate title to the row and choices. Save the pages and seek written clarification through the notice contact before submitting. OS, DBMS and networks on a transcript do not create equivalence. Admissibility disputes are decided by the Chairman of CIL, and that decision is final, so do not self-certify.
7. Build the document pack, then start preparation
Audit the advertisement and date, route, discipline and code, degree title, recognition, mode, First Class proof, every marksheet, final or provisional degree, CGPA conversion, current category certificate, saved application, and later FAQs or addenda. Add ICSI membership and listed-company experience proof only for Company Secretary, and foreign-degree recognition where applicable.
The short version: route first, printed qualification before syllabus similarity, and 59.99 never becomes 60.
