A strong written score cannot replace an eligible, supported application. Under BTSC Advertisement 09/2026 the Laboratory Assistant (Computer Science and IT) merit list runs to 100 marks: 75 from the computer-based test, and 25 from a service credit most applicants cannot earn at all. Verification adds no marks; it only takes away what you failed to prove.

BTSC Lab Assistant selection has separate gates

For the Computer Science and Engineering or Information Technology post, the governing document is BTSC Advertisement 09/2026 and the notices that follow it. The computer-based test is marked out of 100, then scaled into 75 merit marks. The other 25 are a service credit rather than an academic one, open only to candidates already serving on contract on this same post. Verification then matches your uploaded documents against the originals.

In a tiered recruitment like the SSC CGL tier structure, a weak first paper can be pulled up by the second. BTSC gives you one paper and one credit line.

Three-column flow chart of the BTSC Lab Assistant gates: the written assessment scaled into merit marks, the service credit added, and document verification branching into supported and unsupported outcomes.

Read the written-test pattern as a scoring system

Advertisement 09/2026 sets 100 objective questions carrying 100 marks in two hours, in Hindi and English. A correct answer earns 1 mark and a wrong answer costs 0.25 mark. The test runs across several shifts, so scores are normalised before results, and the syllabus is published separately on the Commission's website.

A floor comes first: minimum qualifying marks of 40 percent for unreserved candidates, 36.5 percent for Backward Class, 34 percent for Extremely Backward Class, and 32 percent for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, women and candidates with disabilities. Miss your floor and no other claim survives.

Consider this attempt ledger:

  • Correct: 72

  • Wrong: 16

  • Unattempted: 12

  • Total: 72 + 16 + 12 = 100 questions

The penalty is 16 × 0.25 = 4 marks, so the raw score is 72 - 4 = 68 of 100. Accuracy across the 88 attempted questions is 72 ÷ 88 = 81.8 percent, and average time is 120 ÷ 100 = 1.2 minutes, or 72 seconds per question. That is a pacing average, not a rule for every question.

The scheme also settles when to attempt. An attempt returns p - 0.25(1 - p) marks at accuracy p, which is zero at p = 0.25 ÷ 1.25 = 20 percent. Blind guessing among four options sits at 25 percent, above that line, so those 12 skipped questions are the ledger's costliest line.

The advertisement converts the written score by multiplying the percentage scored by 0.75, and demonstrates it with its own example of 60 × 0.75 = 45. A raw 68 is 68 percent, so 68 × 0.75 = 51 of 75. The BTSC Lab Assistant (CS) 2026 course covers the subject ground the paper draws on.

BTSC merit credit: 5 marks a year, capped at 25

Advertisement 09/2026 grants the 25 credit marks only for satisfactory contract service already rendered on this same Laboratory Assistant post, in institutions under Bihar's Science, Technology and Technical Education Department, at 5 marks a year and never above 25. A residue beyond a completed year counts as another full year only if it exceeds 6 months. The credit reaches only candidates who have cleared the qualifying marks, and only against a salary-payment certificate in the advertisement's Appendix I format, signed by the Principal and uploaded with the online form.

So admissible credit can only be 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25. No value in between exists.

Candidate A scores 68 with three completed years of that service: 68 × 0.75 = 51 of 75, plus 3 × 5 = 15, giving 66 of 100. Candidate B scores 75 with one such year: 75 × 0.75 = 56.25, plus 5, giving 61.25 of 100. B scored 7 more raw marks and still finishes 66 - 61.25 = 4.75 marks behind.

Most applicants hold no such service, so their honest credit is 0 of 25. At 75 percent that is 56.25 of 100 and nothing further, leaving the written paper as their only lever. An entry in the form's experience column is a claim, not a credit.

Build a document-to-claim matrix before the call letter

The advertisement accepts only documents you named and uploaded in the online form; anything produced for the first time on verification day is refused. Build the matrix from what your form already says, and note that every certificate had to be issued on or before 06/05/2026.

Worked rehearsal: 36 months claimed, 30 proved, 5 marks lost

Rina claimed 36 months of contract service as Laboratory Assistant at a government polytechnic. Her Appendix I certificate, signed by the Principal, runs from 01/07/2022 to 31/12/2024.

That proves 6 months in 2022, 12 in 2023 and 12 in 2024, so supported service is 6 + 12 + 12 = 30 completed months, or 2 years and 6 months. The extra-year rule needs a residue above 6 months and hers is exactly 6, so it does not round up. Her credit is 2 × 5 = 10 of 25; the 36 months claimed would have been 3 years, worth 15. Those 6 unproved months cost her 5 marks.

The margin is thin. One further proved month would put the residue at 7 months, round the total to 3 years, and return all 5 marks. So her task is a valid Principal-issued record from 01/01/2025 onward, not a tidier folder. She must never edit or backdate a certificate, and where a period cannot be proved only the supported service is defensible.

Verification expects originals plus a self-attested photocopy set, matched against your uploaded scans. Practise retrieving each original inside 10 minutes and name the scans 01_ID, 02_DIPLOMA, 03_MARKSHEETS and 04_EXPERIENCE.

Fix document traps before verification day

  • Name mismatch: the form says Rina Kumari, one mark sheet says Reena Kumari. Verification matches originals against your uploads, so the correction must live in a document already in that file. Use the Commission's published correction route.

  • Category certificate defect: wrong authority, wrong format, or a closed validity window. An EWS income and asset certificate is valid one year from its date of issue.

  • Unreadable scan: a blurred, dark or illegible upload lets the Commission end a candidature at verification. At 100 percent zoom, confirm the seal, the certificate number and all four edges.

  • Wrong service certificate: anything outside the Appendix I format earns neither the credit marks nor the age relaxation.

The Commission publishes every update on btsc.bihar.gov.in and is under no obligation to inform you by newspaper, SMS or email, so watching that site is your job.

Run exam preparation and evidence preparation together

The Commission publishes the syllabus separately, so build concept work on the diploma ground the recruitment assumes: computer fundamentals and operating systems, programming in C and C++, data structures, DBMS and SQL, computer networks, and digital electronics with computer organisation. File handling and spreadsheet work belong in the same rotation.

A visible 12-hour week holds it together: 7 hours rotating through two of those blocks, 3 hours of timed questions and error review, 1 hour of revision, 1 hour on the document matrix. The check is 7 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 12 hours. Miss a weekday and move its priority block to the weekend rather than doubling the next day. Use the BTSC Lab Assistant (CS) Test Series 2026 for the timed block, where the 0.25 penalty and the 72-second average are the point.

The short version: clear your category's qualifying floor first, treat the 25 credit marks as 0 unless you hold an Appendix I certificate for departmental contract service, and trace every claim to a document already uploaded. The Govt Jobs preparation category covers other recruitments the same way.
