Brainstorming is a group creative-thinking technique for generating a large quantity of ideas by deferring judgment and criticism until after idea generation is complete, encouraging free association and building on others' ideas.

Alex F. Osborn, an advertising executive, originated and popularized this method, codifying it in his 1953 book Applied Imagination with four ground rules: defer judgment, aim for quantity, welcome unusual ideas, and combine or improve on ideas already offered.
