If monthly library fee per student in Central zone for commerce students is Rs.60 which is Rs.20 less than that for science students, then find total monthly fee of library of Central zone.

  1. A.

    Rs.60000

  2. B.

    Rs.45000

  3. C.

    Rs.42000

Correct answer: A

Concept

In a combined pie-chart and table problem, a category not listed in the table is found by subtraction. Here the pie chart gives the share of each zone in the grand total, so a zone's strength = (zone % × grand total). The table gives that zone's Science count, hence Commerce = (zone total − Science). A group's total fee = (number of students in the group) × (fee per student of that group), and the zone's library fee is the sum over both groups.

Application

  1. Central Zone strength: the pie chart assigns 20% of the grand total of 4000 to Central Zone, so total = (20 ÷ 100) × 4000 = 800 students.

  2. Commerce count: the table gives Central Zone Science = 600, so Commerce = 800 − 600 = 200 students.

  3. Fees per student: Commerce fee = Rs. 60, and Science fee is Rs. 20 more, so Science fee = 60 + 20 = Rs. 80.

  4. Total library fee = (Commerce students × Commerce fee) + (Science students × Science fee) = (200 × 60) + (600 × 80) = 12000 + 48000 = Rs. 60000.

Cross-check

Verify by averaging: 800 students would pay 800 × 60 = 48000 if all were charged the Commerce rate; the 600 Science students each pay Rs. 20 extra, adding 600 × 20 = 12000. Total = 48000 + 12000 = Rs. 60000, which matches.
