“मैला आंचल” हिंदी का प्रतिनिधि आंचलिक उपन्यास है और इस कारण इसके कथ्य में प्राय: वे सारी विशेषताएं मिलती हैं, जो किसी भी आंचलिक उपन्यास में पाई जाती हैं। आंचलिक उपन्यास में जो परिवेश लिया जाता है, वह समय और स्थान के जीवन के जितने पक्ष हो सकते हैं, उन पक्षों के जितने चेहरे हो सकते हैं, वे सब उसमें पूरे विस्तार के साथ विद्यमान होते हैं। मैला आंचल भी ऐसे ही कथ्य को धारण करता है। मैला आंचल में ‘मेरीगंज’ गाँव कि विस्तृत तथा समग्र कथा को इस प्रकार प्रस्तुत किया गया है कि अंचल की समस्याओं को प्रकाशित करने का ही रहा है, हालाँकि उद्देश्य रचना प्रक्रिया में घुला हुआ है इसमें अंचल कि सुन्दरता व कुरूपता दोनों का गहरा चित्रण किया गया है। इसमें जातिवाद, अफसरशाही, अवसरवादी राजनीति, मठों और आश्रमों का पाखण्ड भी दिखाया गया है। रेणु जी का मैला आंचल वस्तु और शिल्प दोनों स्तरों पर सबसे अलग है। इसमें एक नए शिल्प में ग्रामीण जीवन को दिखाया गया है। इसकी सबसे बड़ी विशेषता यह है कि इसका नायक कोई व्यक्ति नहीं है, अपितु पूरा का पूरा अंचल ही इसका नायक है। दूसरी प्रमुख बात यह है कि मिथिलांचल की पृष्ठभूमि पर रचे इस उपन्यास में उस अंचल की भाषा विशेष का अधिक प्रयोग किया गया है और यह प्रयोग इतना सार्थक है कि वह वहाँ के लोगों की इच्छा –आकांक्षा, रीति-रिवाज, पर्व- त्यौहार, सोच-विचार को पूरी प्रामाणिकता के साथ पाठक के सामने उपस्थित करता है।
