Concept — how an Assertion–Reason item is decided. Such an item is settled in two independent stages. Stage 1 is a truth test: each statement is judged on its own factual merit, in isolation from the other. Stage 2 is an explanation test, applied when both statements survive Stage 1: it asks whether the Reason states the cause, mechanism or justification that makes the Assertion true. A statement can be perfectly true and still be no more than a neighbouring fact rather than an explanation, so the two stages must never be collapsed into one.

Application — Stage 1, the truth test. Each statement is read separately and tested as a general proposition about classroom communication.

  1. Assertion: classroom teaching is itself an act of communication. Barriers such as noise and other physical obstructions, language and semantic gaps, psychological states like fear or inattention, and cultural or status distance all distort the message travelling from teacher to learner.
