The computer section is where UP Police Computer Operator candidates must show role-specific knowledge. A broad label such as computer awareness can hide very different tasks, from identifying memory types to choosing an Excel operation to recognising a security risk. You need a topic map before you need another pile of questions.

Marks, question counts and dates change with every recruitment cycle, so they belong to the notification. The topic surface behind them is stable, and it splits into seven blocks that reward different kinds of study.

1. Where the CS section sits and where the numbers live

The written examination combines general awareness, reasoning or aptitude, Hindi, and computer knowledge. The computer portion is the closest match to the operator role, so it rewards practical literacy alongside stable fundamentals.

The level it aims at is easier to read off the recruitment rule than to guess at. The Uttar Pradesh Police Computer Staff (Non-Gazetted) Service Rules, 2011 require Intermediate with Physics and Mathematics together with a DOEACC (now NIELIT) O Level certificate in computers, or a qualification recognised as equivalent. 3. Computer fundamentals, hardware and memory

Start with generations and types of computers, then move to the functional parts. The control unit fetches and decodes each instruction and directs the other units, the ALU performs the arithmetic and logic, and registers hold operands and partial results while work is in progress. Classify input, output and storage devices by purpose rather than memorising one long list.

Memory questions test distinctions, so learn them as statements. Primary memory is addressable by the CPU directly; secondary storage is not, and has to be loaded into primary memory first. RAM is volatile and loses everything at power off, while ROM is non-volatile and holds start-up code that must survive it. The hierarchy runs registers, cache, RAM, then secondary storage, with speed and cost per byte falling and capacity rising as you go down. Units climb bit, byte (8 bits), kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, each roughly a thousand times the last.

4. Operating systems and MS Office: the practical core

An operating system manages memory and running programs, controls the file system, drives hardware through drivers, and presents the interface you work in. The questions sit in the practical layer above that: files and folders, extensions, paths, common settings, everyday Windows operations, and plain troubleshooting such as checking the connection, the free storage and where a file was actually saved.

Several pairs are separated by one word, and that word decides the question. A formula is anything you enter after the equals sign, while a function is a named built-in piece used inside one, so SUM is the function in =SUM(B2:D2). Sorting reorders the rows you can see; filtering hides the rows that do not match and leaves the order alone. 5. Internet, networking and security basics

Networking stays at awareness level. A LAN covers a single site such as an office or a station, a WAN links sites across distance, and the internet is the largest network of that kind. Saying what a device or a network category does is worth more here than deep protocol analysis.

Security questions test judgement more than vocabulary. A virus attaches to a file or program and needs that host to spread. Phishing is a message impersonating a trusted sender to extract credentials or payment. Ransomware encrypts data and demands money, which is why a current backup is the real defence. Keep antivirus definitions and updates current, use long unique passwords, and treat an unexpected attachment as suspect. Where two options compete, choose the safest practical response, not the most technical-sounding one.

6. Shortcuts, terminology and the operator flavour

The operator role is why shortcuts, extensions and abbreviations weigh more here than in a general awareness paper. Full forms need a second line each. RAM is random access memory, the volatile working memory a program runs in. ROM is read only memory, which keeps its contents without power. Pair each file extension with its file type and the application that opens it. That second line is what protects you when a question asks you to identify something rather than expand it.

7. How to study this section and the short version

After each block, solve mixed questions and keep an error log. Label each error as missing knowledge, confused terminology, careless reading or weak recall. The label tells you whether to relearn, compare, slow down or retest.
