SSC CGL Post Eligibility: Match Degrees, Age Bands and Skill Tests Before Preferences

A graduate degree does not make every SSC CGL post a safe preference. Use this three-gate worksheet to check education, age, skill standards and post-specific conditions.

Clearing SSC CGL does not produce one safe post list. Degree routes, age bands, qualifying skill standards and physical or medical conditions change by post, so an unsafe preference can fail even after selection. Build a three-gate worksheet ending only in eligible, not eligible or not yet verified. Begin SSC CGL Exam Preparation from that verified post set.

SSC CGL post eligibility needs three yeses

Use one rule: education yes + age yes + post-specific conditions yes = safe to retain. Citizenship and document proof sit above all three.

Create columns for Post, Degree route, Age band on the notice's cutoff date, CKT/DEST standard, Physical or medical condition, and Verdict. A blank cell is never yes. Mark it not yet verified until you check the source and proof.

The SSC CGL Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Attempts, Education and Post-wise Requirements guide gives the broader overview. Test each intended preference instead of flattening all posts into one rule.

SSC CGL degree eligibility: general, statistical and audit routes

The Combined Graduate Level Examination, 2026 notice fixes these qualifications as they stand on 1 August 2026.

Post route

Essential education in this notice

Most posts

Recognised bachelor's degree or equivalent

Junior Statistical Officer

Bachelor's degree, plus at least 60% in Class XII Mathematics, or Statistics at degree level

Statistical Investigator Grade-II

Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Demography, Population Studies, Operation Research, IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Technology, Computer Application, Data Science or AI

Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer

A recognised bachelor's degree is the essential qualification for all three cadres. The two state-cadre routes add a certificate of proficiency in the state's regional or official language at Secondary School Examination level

For the audit posts, Chartered Accountant, Cost and Management Accountant, Company Secretary and the commerce masters are desirable, not essential. Do not widen the Statistical Investigator list to “any quantitative degree”. Final-year candidates may apply, but must hold the essential qualification on 1 August 2026. A distance-learning degree counts only if it was recognised for the period in which you earned it.

SSC CGL age rules start with the base band

For 1 August 2026, SSC gives these DOB windows:

Base band

Current-notice DOB window

Example post families

18-27

2 August 1999 to 1 August 2008

Auditor, Accountant, Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant, Tax Assistant and other listed Group C posts

20-30

2 August 1996 to 1 August 2006

Listed ASO cadres and CBI Sub-Inspector

18-30

2 August 1996 to 1 August 2008

Many other listed Group B posts

18-32

2 August 1994 to 1 August 2008

Junior Statistical Officer

Select the post's base band, work out your age on 1 August 2026, then apply only relaxation you can document: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 for OBC, and 10, 13 or 15 for PwBD depending on the combined category. Ex-servicemen relaxation is 3 years after military service rendered is deducted from actual age.

Worked SSC CGL eligibility files

  • Rhea: BA English, XII Mathematics 72%, no degree-level Statistics, DOB 10 September 1998, UR. Age: 10 September 1998 to 10 September 2025 = 27 years; to 10 July 2026 = 10 months; to 1 August = 22 days. She is 27 years, 10 months, 22 days. Most posts are yes. JSO is yes because 72% >= 60%. Statistical Investigator Grade-II is no because English is unlisted. DOB before 2 August 1999 makes 18-27 no; 20-30, 18-30 and 18-32 are yes.

  • Arjun: BSc Computer Science, XII Mathematics 55%, no degree-level Statistics, DOB 15 August 1997, valid OBC evidence. Age: 15 August 1997 to 15 August 2025 = 28 years; to 15 July 2026 = 11 months; to 1 August = 17 days. He is 28 years, 11 months, 17 days. JSO is no because 55% < 60% and Statistics is absent. Statistical Investigator Grade-II is yes; Computer Science is listed. An 18-27 post is base-band no, but OBC plus 3 years brings him within 30, subject to other conditions.

Two-lane eligibility funnel comparing Rhea and Arjun across SSC CGL degree routes, age bands and skill gates before post preference.

SSC CGL skill tests: common gates and higher standards

The notice makes Section-III of Tier 2 Paper-I, the Computer Knowledge Test, mandatory and qualifying for every post. Higher CKT and DEST standards then apply where computer proficiency is prescribed: ASO in CSS, MEA and AFHQ, named assistants in SFIO, the Ministry of Mines and the India Meteorological Department, the CBIC Inspector and Executive Assistant posts, and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant. For those posts the merit list counts only candidates who clear both tests at the higher standard.

DEST is likewise mandatory and qualifying. Its passage runs to about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes: 2,000 / 15 = about 133.3 key depressions per minute. This is not a pass mark or words-per-minute conversion. Higher DEST standards also apply to Tax Assistant in CBIC and CBDT and UDC/SSA in the Central Bureau of Narcotics. Use the SSC CGL Tier 2 Computer Knowledge Module for preparation. Only PwBD-OH candidates can be exempted from DEST, on a Civil Surgeon's certificate in the prescribed format, and even then not for the higher-standard posts, apart from Tax Assistant in CBDT.

SSC CGL physical and medical eligibility checks

The notice puts a physical and medical screen on Inspector (Central Excise), Inspector (Examiner), Inspector (Preventive Officer), Inspector and Sub-Inspector in CBN, Sub-Inspector or Junior Intelligence Officer in NCB, Sub-Inspector in CBI and NIA, and UDC/SSA in BRO. Annexure-XV and Annexure-XVI hold the height, chest, vision and physical-test standards for those posts. The user department measures them only after final selection and nomination, which is why the check belongs inside your preference list and not after it.

Record CBI Sub-Inspector | degree yes | age yes | physical/vision evidence not checked | not yet verified. Once a post is allotted, SSC does not move a candidate who then fails its physical, medical or educational condition: the candidature is rejected. Only male candidates are eligible for BRO vacancies in this cycle.

SSC CGL course coverage follows the post filter

Tier 1 and Tier 2 Paper-I are common to every post. Paper-II, Statistics, is set only for the Junior Statistical Officer and Statistical Investigator Grade-II shortlists. Paper-III, General Studies covering Finance and Economics, is set only for the Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer shortlists. Your post filter therefore decides whether you owe one extra paper or none at all.

Preparation stage

What it teaches

When it applies

SSC CGL Tier 1 Complete Preparation

General Intelligence and Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension and General Awareness

Build the common Tier 1 route after filtering posts

SSC CGL Tier 2 Paper-II Statistics

Data types and basic concepts, mean, median and mode for grouped data, probability, variables and measurement scales

Only the JSO and Statistical Investigator Grade-II routes sit behind Paper-II

The short version: retain only three-yes preferences

For each preference: copy the post name; match its degree route; test DOB against its base band; apply documented relaxation only; record CKT and DEST standards; inspect physical, medical and language conditions. Missing proof stays not yet verified.

Rhea keeps JSO and drops Statistical Investigator Grade-II. Arjun keeps Statistical Investigator Grade-II and carries OBC proof to any 18-27 post. Neither has one verdict for every post. Finish the worksheet against the current notice, remove every no, resolve every not yet verified, then order preferences and follow the relevant preparation plan.
