CWC Exam Pattern: Post-wise Sections, Marks and Timing
Conflicting CWC tables often belong to different posts or recruitment cycles. Compare the 2024/01 patterns, work out sectional pace and scoring, and turn one mock into a focused study plan.

Found conflicting CWC section tables while preparing? For Central Warehousing Corporation, the post and recruitment cycle determine which pattern applies. This guide compares the historical 2024/01 tables for Management Trainee (MT), Accountant, Superintendent (General) and Junior Technical Assistant (JTA), to guide preparation. Check the organisation too: Central Water Commission uses the same initials.
Match your CWC post to its selection stages
For this recruitment, MT (General), MT (Technical), Accountant and Superintendent (General) followed an online test, document verification and interview. JTA followed an online test and document verification. The Special Recruitment Drive (SRD) Superintendent and JTA posts followed their respective named routes.
There was no universal prelims-mains-interview ladder across these posts. A JTA candidate should prepare for the stated stages without borrowing MT interview requirements. Likewise, Superintendent (General) and Junior Superintendent are different post names; an older Junior Superintendent table cannot answer your Superintendent pattern question. Match practice material to your exact post.
Read the post-wise section breakdown
Recent CWC notifications have specified post-wise patterns. In Advertisement CWC/1-Manpower/DR/Rectt/2024/01, the breakdown was as follows.
Each numerical cell means questions / marks / separately allotted minutes. PK means Professional Knowledge, called Professional/Subject Knowledge for Accountant; Reasoning means Reasoning and Computer Aptitude; Quant/DI means Data Analysis & Interpretation and Quantitative Aptitude; Awareness means General Awareness; English means English Language.
Section | MT General/Technical | Accountant | Superintendent General | JTA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
PK | 100 / 100 / 70 | 60 / 60 / 55 | No separate section | 65 / 65 / 55 |
Reasoning | 25 / 25 / 20 | 30 / 30 / 25 | 60 / 60 / 50 | 40 / 40 / 25 |
Quant/DI | 30 / 30 / 25 | 30 / 30 / 25 | 60 / 60 / 50 | 40 / 40 / 30 |
Awareness | 20 / 20 / 15 | 40 / 40 / 20 | 40 / 40 / 25 | 20 / 20 / 15 |
English | 25 / 25 / 20 | 40 / 40 / 25 | 40 / 40 / 25 | 35 / 35 / 25 |
Total | 200 / 200 / 150 | 200 / 200 / 150 | 200 / 200 / 150 | 200 / 200 / 150 |
All examination figures here come from the 2024/01 advertisement. Illustrative scores, pacing calculations and study splits are teaching examples. A later recruitment cycle may differ.
The table compares sections, not their on-screen sequence. English Language was English-only; the other listed tests were bilingual, Hindi and English.
Professional knowledge contributed 100/200 × 100 = 50% of MT marks, 65/200 × 100 = 32.5% for JTA and 60/200 × 100 = 30% for Accountant. Superintendent's reasoning and quant sections together contributed (60 + 60)/200 × 100 = 60%. Equal totals demand different study priorities.
Turn sectional timing into a realistic pace
For JTA, convert each allocation into seconds before dividing:
Reasoning: 25 × 60 = 1,500 seconds; 1,500/40 = 37.5 seconds per question.
Quant/DI: 30 × 60 = 1,800 seconds; 1,800/40 = 45 seconds per question.
Professional knowledge: 55 × 60 = 3,300 seconds; 3,300/65 ≈ 50.8 seconds per question.
These averages guide practice, not individual question deadlines. Practise each section within its allocation instead of treating 150 minutes as freely transferable time.
For puzzle practice, Banking Exams Reasoning Puzzles: A Repeatable Grid Method teaches a repeatable method for reasoning puzzle sets. Its grid technique transfers; its banking context does not set CWC rules.
Calculate the cost of wrong answers
The advertisement deducts one quarter of a question's assigned marks for an incorrect objective answer, with no penalty for blanks. For these one-mark questions, that means 0.25 marks per wrong answer.
Take a hypothetical JTA reasoning result: 28 correct, eight wrong and four blank.
Questions: 28 + 8 + 4 = 40.
Attempts: 28 + 8 = 36; accuracy = 28/36 × 100 ≈ 77.8%.
Penalty: 8 × 0.25 = 2 marks; blanks deduct zero.
Raw corrected score: 28 − 2 = 26 out of 40.
Sectional and overall minimum scores applied, with professional knowledge qualification fixed at 60% for MT, Accountant and JTA. Protect every section. Before increasing attempts, classify those eight errors as conceptual, careless or time-driven; that diagnosis tells you what to repair.
Separate common skills from professional knowledge
For common-skill practice, prioritise arithmetic and data interpretation, reasoning grids and computer basics, reading comprehension and grammar, and general-awareness revision. These are preparation recommendations, not an exhaustive syllabus.
Try this original DI example: warehouse intake rises from 240 to 300 units. Increase = 300 − 240 = 60; percentage rise = 60/240 × 100 = 25%. Build this accuracy with Banking Exams Quant Aptitude: Arithmetic Before Speed.
The professional syllabus has a different job. JTA's indicative distribution was Basic Agriculture 15, Botany 10, Zoology 15, Chemistry 15 and Physics 10: 15 + 10 + 15 + 15 + 10 = 65. Examples include crop production, cell biology and chemical bonding.
MT General, MT Technical and Accountant need their own professional syllabus checks. JTA science preparation cannot replace them, and computer aptitude is not a full CS examination.
Use one mock to set next week's priorities
An illustrative JTA plan uses six 90-minute sessions: 6 × 90 = 540 minutes, or nine hours.
Study area | Full week: minutes | One session missed: minutes |
|---|---|---|
Professional knowledge | 180 | 150 |
Quant/DI | 120 | 90 |
Reasoning/computer aptitude | 90 | 75 |
English | 60 | 45 |
General awareness | 45 | 45 |
Error review | 45 | 45 |
Total | 540 | 450 |
Missing a session leaves 540 − 90 = 450 minutes. Preserve review and adjust allocations after diagnosing your mock. The Placement Preparation Courses for IT Jobs category offers supplementary aptitude and reasoning resources in a placement-oriented setting.
Check your notification, then choose focused practice
Confirm the organisation, exact post, advertisement number, marks, separate timers, wrong-answer rule and selection stages. Check the careers section of the official CWC website for your advertisement, amendments and examination handout.
If your mock reveals a quant or reasoning weakness, Aptitude Course for Placement is optional common-skill support. CWC professional knowledge and cycle-specific rules require separate preparation.
