Concept: A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a specifically demarcated geographic enclave within a state that operates under a distinct, more liberal set of trade, tax, and regulatory laws than the rest of the country. It is meant to attract export-oriented investment, and its precise site is chosen for trade-and-logistics advantages such as port or border access — not simply because a place is a state's administrative capital.

Application: On 16 December 2019, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry formally notified Tripura's first-ever SEZ at Paschim Jalefa in the Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura district. It is developed by the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC) as a sector-specific zone for agro/food-processing, bamboo, and rubber-based industries, and its site was chosen because of Sabroom's proximity to Chittagong port in Bangladesh via the Feni river bridge.
