Who has been conferred the 1st Atal Bihari Vajpayee Lifetime Achievement Award…

State governments in India institute named lifetime-achievement honours — often after a national leader — to formally recognise a person's sustained, career-long contribution to a specific field, distinct from a one-off prize. Such an honour is usually inaugurated with a single 'first' recipient at a marquee public event, and that inaugural conferral becomes a fixed, verifiable fact: who received it, when, by whom, and for what.

The Government of Tripura instituted the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Lifetime Achievement Award on this pattern. Its first recipient was Thanga Darlong, a nonagenarian tribal folk musician felicitated at the valedictory function of the 37th Agartala Book Fair on 1 March 2019 by the then Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura. He was honoured for his lifelong effort to preserve Rosem, a bamboo flute-like folk instrument of the Darlong community — the same year in which he also received the national Padma Shri.

Checking the remaining names against their own, separate honours confirms none fits this specific state award:

• Khagesh Dev Burman, from Tripura's royal lineage, is a writer and editor recognised with the state's Sachin Samman for his book on S. D. Burman's music — a literary honour, not this lifetime-achievement award.

• Chandrakanta Murasingh, Tripura's leading Kokborok-language poet, was honoured nationally with the Sahitya Akademi's Bhasha Samman for his contribution to Kokborok literature — again a different recognition track.

• Gokulananda Gitiswami, a Bishnupriya Manipuri poet and social reformer, received the community title 'Gitiswami' in 1935 and passed away in 1962 — decades before this 2019 state honour was even instituted.

Hence, Thanga Darlong is the first recipient of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Lifetime Achievement Award conferred by the Government of Tripura.
