Concept: Types of communication are named after the PATH a message travels, not after the device that carries it. On that criterion the telephone is classified as linear communication.

Cross-check — why the other labels describe different things:

• Circular is a process view in which sender and receiver keep swapping roles so that every response re-enters one continuous loop, as pictured in the Osgood–Schramm model — a way of modelling the whole process rather than a label for the route of a single transmission.

• Non-linear describes material that need not be taken in one fixed sequence — graphic, visual or hypertext presentation that the receiver can enter at different points.

• Mechanised describes the machinery that carries a message — printing presses, teleprinters, automated transmission equipment — so it answers by what equipment, not along what path.

Note: In wider communication theory a phone conversation is often described as interactive, because feedback is immediate. The UGC NET June 2013 Paper 1 official answer key nevertheless records linear communication for this item, and that is the classification to carry into the exam.
