Correct answer: C

Concept: In educational psychology, learning is defined as a relatively permanent change in behaviour, or in behaviour potential, that results from experience or practice. Because the change must arise from experience, changes produced by maturation, heredity, fatigue, illness or drugs fall outside the definition, and learning is treated as a purposive, goal-directed process rather than an idle one.

Two classical formulations state this same idea in different vocabularies. Thorndike’s connectionism describes learning as the forming of a bond in which the appropriate response is selected and connected to a stimulus, strengthened through trial and error under the Law of Effect. Skinner describes learning as a process of progressive behaviour adaptation, in which behaviour is adjusted step by step to the demands of the environment.

Application: each of the five statements is now tested against that definition.

Statement

Reading in educational psychology

A — learning is a time-pass activity

Rejected. Learning is purposive and goal-directed and must leave a relatively permanent change; a time-pass framing supplies neither the intent nor the durable change the definition requires.

B — learning is selecting the appropriate response and connecting it with the stimulus

Accepted. This is Thorndike’s connectionist (S–R bond) definition: the satisfying response is selected out of many trials and stamped in against the stimulus.

C — learning is a pre-given insight

Rejected. In Gestalt psychology insight is reached by restructuring the perceptual field while working on a problem; an insight already given in advance would demand no experience at all.

D — learning is a process of progressive behaviour adaptation

Accepted. This is Skinner’s formulation: behaviour is progressively adapted to the environment through reinforced practice.

E — learning is a bye-product of heredity and genetics

Rejected. Heredity fixes capacity and readiness to learn; the definition credits the behavioural change itself to experience and practice, and expressly excludes maturational change.

Cross-check: the two statements that survive the test are the stimulus–response connection statement and the progressive behaviour adaptation statement, so the accepted response is the set “B and D Only”. Every other listed set imports at least one rejected statement — the time-pass framing, the pre-given insight, or the heredity by-product claim — so none of them can stand.
