You may speak your regional language socially yet struggle to read, write, or respond clearly during the NIACL Assistant Regional Language Test. NIACL's past Assistant advertisements ask for all three proficiencies, and a candidate found weak in any one of them is disqualified. Fourteen days is enough to lift a weak skill by two rubric points, provided the daily hour is split by your diagnostic score rather than by whichever skill you enjoy practising.
What NIACL officially said about the Regional Language Test
NIACL's 2023 detailed Assistant advertisement required reading, writing, and speaking proficiency in the regional language of the chosen State or UT. A candidate not found proficient would be disqualified. The 17 April 2025 notice said 2024 exercise candidates were shortlisted from Tier II performance. Appearing for RLT did not itself confer selection.
Check the official NIACL recruitment page and your call letter for language, reporting details, and documents. NIACL publishes no RLT score, pass mark, passage length or task list, so every number below is a target you set for yourself at home, not a cut-off you can be measured against.
Start with a 15-point reading, writing, and speaking diagnostic
Set a 35-minute baseline:
Spend 10 minutes reading a 120-word regional-language public notice and answering three factual questions.
Spend 15 minutes writing a 100-word response.
Use 10 minutes for 30 seconds of preparation, a 90-second recording, and one review.
Use one rubric: 5 is accurate and easy to understand; 4 has one or two minor slips; 3 is clear despite several slips; 2 is incomplete or often unclear; 1 is fragments only; 0 is no usable response.
Example: Reading 4 + Writing 1 + Speaking 3 = 8/15. Writing is lowest and has the furthest to travel, from fragments to clear-despite-slips, so it takes the largest practice block. Set Day 13 at 12/15 with no skill below 3/5. A longer run of the same three-skill scale, built on a 78-word municipal notice with nine fact units to preserve, is worked through in NIACL Assistant Regional Language Test Preparation: A Read, Write and Speak Framework.
Worked example: turn one Hindi notice into all three skills
Work in the language named on your application form. Hindi is only the example used here.
पिछले दो दिनों की भारी वर्षा के कारण शहर के निचले इलाकों में पानी भर गया है। जिला प्रशासन ने नागरिकों से अनावश्यक यात्रा न करने, बिजली के खुले तारों से दूर रहने और जरूरत पड़ने पर नियंत्रण कक्ष से संपर्क करने को कहा है। नगर निगम की टीमें जल निकासी और सड़क सफाई का काम कर रही हैं।
Read it aloud once in 75 seconds. Answer: “यात्रा न करने की सलाह क्यों दी गई है?”, “नागरिकों को किस खतरे से दूर रहना है?”, and “नगर निगम की टीमें कौन-से दो काम कर रही हैं?” Write a 50-60 word summary in 8 minutes. After 30 seconds of preparation, retell it orally for 75-90 seconds without looking.
Retain all three facts, leave at most two writing errors uncorrected, and stay within 75-90 seconds without changing meaning.
Follow a 14-day plan that gives the weakest skill more time
Use this 60-minute daily model. It assumes writing scored lowest, as in the diagnostic above. If reading or speaking is your weakest skill, swap that column's minutes with the writing column and keep every row at 60 minutes:
Days | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|
1-2 | Diagnostic + error classification | Diagnostic | Diagnostic |
3-5 | 20 min | 25 min | 15 min |
6-8 | 15 min | 30 min | 15 min |
9-11 | 15 min | 20 min | 25 min |
Do two mixed drills on Day 12, repeat the 35-minute diagnostic on Day 13, and complete 30 minutes of light review plus the call-letter checklist on Day 14.
If you miss a day, do 5 minutes reading, 10 minutes writing, and 5 minutes speaking, a 20-minute minimum. Resume next day without doubling the load.

Build a useful regional-language word bank, not a translation list
Collect 40 entries from newspapers, notices, and customer-service situations: 10 everyday service words, 10 document words, 10 insurance or banking words, and 10 direction or location words. Hindi starters are दावा (claim), पॉलिसीधारक (policyholder), पहचान प्रमाण (identity proof), and शाखा (branch). Write one natural sentence each.
For a daily eight-word closed-book check, read for 2 minutes, cover the list, then recall each meaning and a sentence. Keep a word after scoring 6/8 on two days. Prefer standard terms to English transliteration. The reading and error-review routine in Bank PO English: RC-First Strategy for IBPS and SBI transfers to this bank, run in your own language rather than in English.
Use one error log to improve writing and speaking
Keep four columns: original response, corrected form, reason, and next drill. For example:
Original response | Corrected form | Reason | Next drill |
|---|---|---|---|
नगर निगम की टीम काम कर रहे हैं | नगर निगम की टीम काम कर रही है | Subject and verb agreement | Write five new sentences with feminine singular subjects |
Record one 90-second response. Count pauses longer than 3 seconds, English substitutions, and repeated fillers. If the first count is 4 + 3 + 6 = 13, aim for no more than 2 + 1 + 3 = 6 next time, then log your two commonest fillers in the reason column so the next drill targets them by name.
Treat the call letter and document check as part of preparation
NIACL's 17 April 2025 notice asked shortlisted candidates for a completed Data Sheet and Declaration with self-attested copies named in the call letter. Failure to report could cancel candidature, and requests to change date, time, or venue were not entertained for that exercise.
Build your own T-minus routine. At T-48 hours, print and read every instruction. At T-24, arrange originals and self-attested copies in call-letter order. At T-12, confirm the route and ID. Before leaving, check the call letter, ID, documents, water, and permitted stationery. Where your call letter and this list disagree, the call letter wins. The short version and next step
Practise all three skills daily. Put the extra 10-15 minutes into the lowest diagnostic score, retest on Day 13, and keep Day 14 light. Carry four numbers: 3 skills, 15 points, 60 minutes a day, 14 days.
For the rest of the NIACL track, start at the NIACL AO IT Specialist Preparation hub. If you are also sitting the AO IT Specialist prelims and mains, NIACL AO IT Specialist 2026 is built for that paper. Neither covers the regional language, which stays a self-study job in the language on your form.
