CRP-SPL-XVI places Professional Knowledge in both online phases, alongside aptitude or awareness tests that vary by post group. IBPS SO exam pattern: two online phases, then interview
The official CRP-SPL-XVI page links the 30 June 2026 notification. It sets out an Online Preliminary examination, an Online Main examination, and a Common Interview for candidates shortlisted from Main. The notification fixes the weight of Main to interview at 80:20, so the interview adjusts a shortlist rather than rewriting it.
English Language and Reasoning appear in both phases for every post. IT, Agriculture, HR and Marketing take Quantitative Aptitude as the third test, while Law and Rajbhasha take General Awareness with special reference to the banking industry. Professional Knowledge is post-specific and appears in both online phases.

The notification requires qualification in each of the four tests at minimum cut-off marks decided by IBPS, so a strong Professional Knowledge score cannot rescue a failed English or Reasoning section. All four tests have to clear inside the same 80 minutes, which is why Professional Knowledge work starts before Prelims rather than after it.
IBPS SO Mains pattern: qualifying tests and merit are different

The official objective total is 150 questions, 200 marks and 125 minutes, and the descriptive paper takes the overall total to 225 marks in 155 minutes. Law and Rajbhasha reach the same totals but swap Quantitative Aptitude for General Awareness, and Rajbhasha's descriptive paper is Professional Knowledge rather than English.
CRP-SPL-XVI makes every other Main test qualifying and builds the merit list from the Professional Knowledge score alone. Adding your four objective scores into a single 200-mark total therefore misreads the exam: 100 of those marks decide your rank and the other 100 only have to clear their cut-offs.
IBPS SO negative marking: a worked Prelims score
The notification deducts one fourth, or 0.25, of a question's assigned marks for a wrong objective answer in either online phase. Blanks have no penalty. The deduction is not always 0.25 marks.
IT Prelims Professional Knowledge has 25 questions for 50 marks, so each is worth 50 / 25 = 2 marks. For 18 correct, 4 wrong and 3 blank:

For 25 one-mark English questions the same rule gives 18 - (4 x 0.25) = 17/25. The rate is identical, but each wrong Professional Knowledge answer sheds 0.5 marks against 0.25 in English, so a loose guess in the merit-bearing test costs twice as much. Use that when you decide what to leave blank.

IBPS SO preparation split: a worked 12-hour week
Suppose an IT diagnostic gives English 18/25 = 72%, Reasoning 15/25 = 60%, Quantitative Aptitude 12/25 = 48%, and Professional Knowledge 24/50 = 48%. The latter two are weakest, while Professional Knowledge also carries Main merit.
Use 5 hours Professional Knowledge + 2.5 hours Quantitative Aptitude + 1.5 hours Reasoning + 1 hour English + 1 hour descriptive writing + 1 hour mixed error review = 12 hours. Split the five IT domain hours as 2 DBMS + 1 networks + 1 operating systems + 1 programming = 5 hours, then rebalance them as your section scores move. The notification fixes the marks per test but not the topic mix inside Professional Knowledge.
If two hours disappear, use 4 hours Professional Knowledge + 2 hours Quantitative Aptitude + 1 hour Reasoning + 1 hour English + 1 hour descriptive writing + 1 hour mixed error review = 10 hours. Keep role-specific study and error review.
