Concept

Ujjayanta Palace is the former royal residence of the princely state of Tripura, located in Agartala. Identifying who established a heritage structure depends on the ruler under whose commission and reign its construction was carried out, not merely the dynasty name it belongs to.

Application

The present Ujjayanta Palace was constructed during 1899-1901 under the reign of the Manikya ruler Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya. He commissioned the new palace after the earlier royal residence was damaged in the great Assam earthquake of 1897. The two-storey mansion, set amid Mughal-style gardens, was named Ujjayanta Palace by Rabindranath Tagore.

Krishna Kishore Manikya and Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya were also Manikya rulers, but the construction of the palace falls squarely within Radha Kishore Manikya's reign (1896-1909). Dhanya Manikya belonged to a much earlier era of Tripura's history, long before this palace was built, so none of the other rulers match the 1899-1901 construction window.
