Concept

Cumulative data gives the running total up to and including a stated day. The value for a single day is obtained by subtracting the previous cumulative entry from the current cumulative entry.

When p% of a group of size N belongs to one category, that category contains (p/100) × N members and the remainder of the group contains ((100 − p)/100) × N members. A cumulative percentage column is turned into counts by applying the same rule to the stated grand total.

Application

1. Visitors to Kullu on Tuesday alone = (cumulative till Tuesday) − (cumulative till Monday) = 1060 − 360 = 700.

2. Foreigners make up 20% of that group, so the visitors to Kullu on Tuesday who are not foreigners = (100 − 20)% of 700 = 80% of 700 = 560.

3. Combined Kullu and Manali visitors on Friday alone = (100% − 80%) of 4000 = 20% of 4000 = 800.

4. Visitors to Kullu on Friday alone = 1960 − 1700 = 260, so visitors to Manali on Friday = 800 − 260 = 540.

5. Foreigners make up 40% of that group, so the visitors to Manali on Friday who are foreigners = 40% of 540 = 216.

6. Required total = 560 + 216 = 776.

Each split can be tested against its own day total: the 20% foreign share of Tuesday’s Kullu visitors is 140, and 560 + 140 = 700; the 60% non-foreign share of Friday’s Manali visitors is 324, and 216 + 324 = 540. Both day totals are reproduced, so the two counts are consistent with the table.
