Concept

Learning output is the joint product of two things: cognitive capacity, which sets the ceiling of what a learner is able to process, and emotional state, which decides how much of that ceiling is actually available at a given moment.

Affective states such as anxiety, low mood, fear of judgement or insecurity occupy working memory and narrow the span of attention. Capacity is then spent on monitoring the emotional state instead of encoding, organising and retrieving the task material, so underlying potential and observed performance move apart.

Application

Here the learner's intelligence is stated to be high, so the cognitive ceiling is not the limiting variable.
