Concept — turning a percentage table into money

A percentage-distribution table gives shares rather than head-counts. The calculation rests on these linked quantities:

• Students in an employment area = (area percentage ÷ 100) × batch strength.

• Annual group earnings = number of students × average monthly salary × 12; divide rupees by 1,00,000 to express the result in lakh.

Application — the 2021 batch

1. The 2021 batch strength is 1,100 students (the pass-out totals for 2019–2023 are 800, 600, 1,100, 1,200 and 1,000).

2. Hardware took 23% of that batch: 23 ÷ 100 × 1,100 = 253 students, at an average of ₹75,500 per month.

3. Software Development took 21% of the same batch: 21 ÷ 100 × 1,100 = 231 students, at an average of ₹70,500 per month.

4. Hardware earnings for the year = 253 × 75,500 × 12 = ₹22,92,18,000, that is 2292.18 lakh.

5. Software Development earnings for the year = 231 × 70,500 × 12 = ₹19,54,26,000, that is 1954.26 lakh.

6. Excess earned by Hardware = 2292.18 − 1954.26 = 337.92 lakh.

Cross-check — subtract first, then annualise

Doing it the other way round gives the same figure: in one month the two groups earn 253 × 75,500 = ₹1,91,01,500 and 231 × 70,500 = ₹1,62,85,500, a monthly gap of ₹28,16,000; over 12 months that is ₹3,37,92,000, which is 337.92 lakh. Both routes agree, so the ×12 annualisation and the ₹1,00,000-per-lakh conversion have each been applied exactly once.

Hardware therefore earned ₹337.92 lakh more than Software Development in 2021.
