Concept

Non-verbal communication is classified by the channel that carries the signal. Within the vocal channel, theory separates two layers: the verbal content — the words that are chosen — and the vocal features that carry those words. Paralanguage is the name given to that second layer: everything the voice does apart from the words themselves.

It covers pitch, tone, loudness, rate of speech, stress, pauses and silences, and voice quality — the "how it is said" layer riding on top of the "what is said" layer. The prefix para- means "alongside": it runs beside language without being language.

Applying it to this question

The stem fixes attention on the voice ("aspects of the voice") and then subtracts the speech, that is, the words. What remains is precisely the vocal-but-non-verbal residue — pitch, tone, volume, tempo and pause. That residue is what communication theory labels para language.

A worked illustration: the three words "Come here now" spoken slowly and softly, and then the same three words spoken loudly and sharply, carry identical verbal content but opposite messages. Nothing in the speech changed; the whole difference was carried by paralanguage.

Contrast with the other terms

• Physical language points to the body as the carrier — gesture, posture, facial expression, eye contact — the domain of kinesics, which is seen and not heard, so it lies outside the voice altogether.

• Personal language points to an individual's own habitual vocabulary and expressions (an idiolect). That is a matter of word choice, so it belongs to the speech the stem has already set aside.

• Delivery language is not a channel in the standard taxonomy; "delivery" describes the overall manner of presenting a speech, mixing voice and body together rather than isolating the voice.
