Read the passage carefully and answer the question given below:

Any one who appreciates the Third World plight will have few difficulties in subscribing to the perspective of dependence. In doing so, most will, none the less commit some gross methodological errors brought about by their subscription also to the fallacious Euro cultural epistemological notion of history as a dialectically programmed progressivist universalism on the march towards the Euro humanist end. This complex fallacy buries human agency so deeply in the huge structure of global capitalism that it becomes nearly impossible to locate. It is in this context that misleading historical ideas and concepts such as universalism, Euro humanism, determinism, developmentalism, progressivism and dialecticism must be exposed, condemned for what they are: deceptive and dangerous from the viewpoint of Third World development in the dynamics of global capitalism on ascendancy. The versatility of this set of fallacies, however, is not to be underestimated. It pervades the entire spectrum of western based political interpretation of present and future histories. Eurocentric progressivist universalism believes that history is necessarily a matter of progressing from one historical stage to another until history itself stops, dies or ends, but not before final history has spread itself universally all over the world, obliterating all other histories and replacing them with itself totally. The core belief here in this piece of monstrous thinking is the absurd idea that history moves in a series of dialectical steps.

Correct answer: A

CONCEPT

Reading-comprehension sentence completion is solved by identifying the relationship asserted in the passage, then choosing the completion that preserves that relationship. A word in an option must match both the passage’s meaning and the grammatical role of the unfinished sentence.

APPLICATION

  1. The passage says Eurocentric historical ideas bury human agency inside the large structure of global capitalism.

  2. The unfinished sentence asks what the various Euro-concepts are used to do. The passage’s image of burying or obscuring points to a concealing function.

  3. “Enmask” means to mask or conceal; therefore “enmask the narrow motive of capitalism” preserves the passage’s criticism.

CONTRAST

  • “Expose the vulnerabilities of the Third World” shifts the object from concealed capitalist motives to Third World weaknesses.

  • “Support the Third World development” gives the concepts a beneficial role, whereas the passage calls them deceptive and dangerous for that development.

  • “Identify the need to falsify the notion of global capitalism” makes global capitalism itself the notion being disproved, while the passage condemns the Eurocentric historical concepts operating within that structure.

RESULT

The sentence is completed by “enmask the narrow motive of capitalism.”
