Ancient mahaviharas were organized centres of advanced learning whose identity is established from the traditions they taught, their institutional patronage, and the work of their scholars. A site may host visitors from many regions without becoming a centre of those visitors’ languages, philosophies, or arts.

Application

Vikramashila was founded by the Pala ruler Dharmapala in eastern India. Its monastic curriculum and leading teachers were especially associated with Vajrayana or Tantrayana, the esoteric stream of Buddhism.

Contrast

• Arabic was a major scholarly language in medieval West Asia, especially in Abbasid intellectual centres; that tradition does not identify Vikramashila’s specialization.

• Chinese philosophy comprises traditions rooted in China, such as Confucian and Daoist thought; foreign students at an Indian mahavihara do not make it a centre of Chinese philosophy.
