Concept

In a coded blood-relation set, gender is fixed by the relationship word itself, not by the letter. A relationship that can belong to only one sex pins that person's gender: father-in-law, brother, son are always male; wife, mother, sister-in-law are always female. Read the LEFT symbol of every code first; for X*Y (X is wife of Y), “wife” also forces the partner Y to be male.

Applying the codes

Decode the gender each code reveals, taking the role on the left and the partner where a marriage code (*) is used:

Cross-check by listing each sex

Collecting the results gives two disjoint lists, and no letter is assigned two sexes:

• Males: X, Z, T, O, L, K, D — seven members.

• Females: W, R, Y, U, I, J — six members.

The thirteen people form one connected family and every gender is uniquely fixed, so the count is not indeterminate. The number of male members is 7.
