Direction : Table given below shows percentage of total literate population of five (A, B, C, D & E) villages, literate male, illiterate male and total female (literate + illiterate). Read the data carefully and answer the questions.

Note - 'NA' means some values are missing which you have to calculate if required.

Correct answer: C
Concept
In this set-up the village population splits two ways at once: by literacy (literate vs illiterate) and by gender (male vs female). The total of all four cells equals the whole population, so Total population = Total males + Total females. A percentage such as "male illiterate is 40% out of total illiterate" is a share of the illiterate group only, never of the whole population — always anchor each percentage to the base it is quoted against.
Application
Let the total population of village A be T. Literacy is 75%, so illiterates form the remaining 25%, i.e. illiterate population = 0.25T.
Male illiterates are 40% of the illiterate group: 0.40 × 0.25T = 0.10T. So male illiterates = 0.10T.
Total males = male literates + male illiterates = 1050 + 0.10T.
Total females are given as 750. Using Total population = males + females: T = (1050 + 0.10T) + 750.
Solve: T − 0.10T = 1800 → 0.90T = 1800 → T = 2000.
Hence total males = 1050 + 0.10 × 2000 = 1050 + 200 = 1250, and the required difference = total males − total females = 1250 − 750 = 500.
Cross-check
Rebuild every cell with T = 2000: illiterates = 500, of which male illiterates = 200 and female illiterates = 300; male literates = 1050; female literates = 750 − 300 = 450. Adding the four cells: 1050 + 200 + 450 + 300 = 2000 = T, and males (1050 + 200 = 1250) minus females (750) again gives 500.
