Which pattern best reflects group conformity when members align their actions…

Concept: A group norm is a shared standard of behaviour — written or unwritten — that a group treats as expected of its members. Conformity is the adjustment of a member’s own conduct to those shared standards, which is why it is read from what members actually do, and not from how duties are assigned or how influence is distributed inside the group.

Application: The stem describes members bringing their conduct into line with what the group expects of them. Those shared expectations are exactly what the term “norm” denotes, so behaviour that stays inside them is norm adherence — the observable face of conformity.

Contrast: The three remaining patterns each report a different feature of group life:

• Role ambiguity — uncertainty about which duties, limits and outcomes belong to a member’s own position. It reports a gap in role clarity, not conduct measured against a common standard.

• Leadership emergence — the gradual rise of one member into an influential, directing position in a group that began without an appointed head. It reports differentiation of status among members.

• Task avoidance — withholding of effort from the work the group has taken on. It reports the level of contribution, not agreement with a shared standard.
