The Preamble to the Constitution of India declares India to be a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic and resolves to secure to all citizens four values — Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Fraternity is the Preamble ideal of common brotherhood, assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation; among the four, it is the most inherently relational value, since it is expressed through how people of differing backgrounds relate to and coexist with one another, rather than through an entitlement held by any one individual alone.

A classroom in which students from diverse social, economic, religious, or regional backgrounds learn together is a direct, everyday instance of this relational value: interacting, cooperating, and building mutual respect across difference is exactly the kind of coexistence that fraternity describes, which is why an inclusive, mixed classroom is treated as a site where fraternity is practised.

• Sovereignty is the Preamble's description of India as an independent political entity, supreme and free from external control over its own territory and people — an attribute of the Indian State itself, not a description of how individual students relate to one another in a classroom.

• Equality (given concrete shape in Articles 14 to 18) assures every citizen equal status before the law and equal opportunity, while still permitting reasonable classification for specific public purposes — it concerns fairness of legal and institutional treatment, a different focus from the bond formed specifically among people of differing backgrounds who come together.

• Liberty (given concrete shape mainly in Articles 19 and 21) protects an individual's freedom of thought, expression, belief, and lawful action from unwarranted interference — it centres on what one person may do, not on the collective bond that forms among a group of differing individuals.

Because the scenario is specifically about diverse individuals coming together and coexisting as one community, Fraternity is the constitutional value most strongly promoted.
