What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you throw it…

Concept

Riddles built around a lifecycle or state-transition ask you to find a single object that passes through several distinct physical states in a fixed order. Each clue in the riddle is one snapshot of that single ongoing process, and the correct answer must satisfy every snapshot together, not just one of them in isolation.

Application

Charcoal fits all three snapshots of the same combustion process: it is black in its unburned, purchased form; it glows red while it is burning; and once it is fully burned out, it crumbles into gray ash.

Cross-check

Checking the other options against the same three-state requirement rules them out:

• A shoe or a belt does not undergo combustion at all in normal use, so neither one produces a red glow nor turns into gray ash — they satisfy none of the three states beyond an initial resemblance in color.

• Treating every option as correct ignores that only one everyday object here actually completes the full black-to-red-to-gray combustion sequence; the others simply don't undergo that physical change.
