SBI PO vs IBPS PO: what the two exams share
Both selections run in stages: a Preliminary exam that screens, a Main exam that does the heavy lifting in ranking, and a final selection round. SBI PO vs IBPS PO exam pattern: the three differences that change your prep
First, SBI's Mains has the reputation of the tougher paper. Aspirants who have written both will tell you the same thing: SBI's Data Analysis and Interpretation sets run longer, its reasoning puzzles stack more conditions, and the overall paper punishes slow, pattern-matched solving. Treat that reputation as a planning input, not an official fact. What it changes is your mock ceiling: if your practice difficulty is calibrated to SBI Mains, an IBPS Mains paper feels manageable. Calibrate the other way around and SBI will feel like a different exam on the day.
Second, SBI's final stage is more than an interview. Recent SBI PO cycles have included a psychometric test and a group exercise alongside the personal interview, while the IBPS PO final stage is the interview. Confirm the current cycle's exact composition in each official notification, because these stages have shifted before. The prep consequence is real: a psychometric test cannot be crammed, and a group exercise rewards people who have practised speaking in a group under observation. If SBI is on your list, that practice belongs in your plan, not in the week before the result.
Third, the two recruitments run on different calendars run by different bodies. SBI recruits for itself; IBPS conducts a common recruitment on behalf of the participating public sector banks. Notification and exam dates move year to year, which is precisely why anchoring your preparation to a date is fragile. SBI PO vs IBPS PO career differences
The written papers overlap; the careers do not.
SBI PO means one employer, known on day one. You are joining State Bank of India, the largest public sector bank in the country, with its scale, brand and network. Many aspirants target SBI specifically for that reason.
IBPS PO means allotment. You list bank preferences, and your final merit decides which participating public sector bank you join. You get an officer's post either way, but not certainty about where.
Compensation and allowances differ between banks, and the exact pay structure for a cycle sits in that cycle's official notification. Do not plan around figures quoted in coaching material.
Both are genuine officer careers. Scale-based promotions, transferable postings and real responsibility come with either path. Neither choice is a compromise; they are different doors into the same profession.

The prepare-for-both plan
Because the syllabus overlap is near-total, preparing for both costs barely more than preparing for one. The plan:
Build one Prelims core. English, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning, drilled for speed and accuracy. This single engine clears both screens.
Run Mains preparation in parallel from the start. Data Analysis and Interpretation, reasoning at full difficulty, and General/Economy/Banking Awareness as a daily habit rather than a final-month cram. Mains is too large to compress into the gap between stages.
Start descriptive writing early. Both Mains papers include essay and letter writing. One practice piece a week from month one beats twenty in the last fortnight.
Calibrate mocks to SBI difficulty. Prepare for the harder paper and you are automatically prepared for the other. The reverse is not true.
Add SBI's extra stages when the notification confirms them. Group-discussion practice and honest, consistent self-presentation for the psychometric stage. This is a small, late slice of the plan, but it must exist.
The short version
SBI PO and IBPS PO share one written syllabus, differ in Mains difficulty and final-stage structure, and lead to different but equally real officer careers. So the decision is not "which one", it is "prepare once, at the higher bar, and write both."
