You may recognise words such as careful, three and wooden in isolation, yet lose marks when an adjective follows a linking verb, several modifiers crowd one noun, or a comparison shifts from two items to a whole group. The solution is a compact rule system for identifying an adjective's job, arranging adjective order and choosing the correct degree of comparison. Use the Aptitude for Placements: Section Topics and Weekly Plan to place this grammar work inside a broader preparation plan.
1. Start With the Job: What an Adjective Describes
An adjective adds quality, quantity, identity or classification to a noun or pronoun. In a difficult question and the question is difficult, difficult describes question. In a quick answer, quick describes answer; in she answered quickly, quickly describes the action.
Positions include attributive (Riya solved a difficult puzzle), subject complement (The puzzle seems difficult), object complement (The panel found the answer convincing) and postpositive (We need something useful). In The soup tastes good, tastes links soup to good, so good is not an adverb.
First locate the noun or pronoun. Then test quality or class against an action's manner. In The late train moved slowly, late describes train; slowly describes moved.
2. Learn the Adjective Types Without Letting Labels Hide the Meaning

Exam grammar may label this, my, three and each adjectives; modern grammar may use determiner or determinative. Follow the question's terms.
In Those three diligent students finished their first assignment, Those is demonstrative, three cardinal and diligent descriptive for students; their is possessive and first ordinal for assignment. Several classes share one noun phrase.
3. Put Multiple Adjectives in a Natural Order
Use this practical pre-noun sequence:
determiner/number -> opinion -> size -> age -> shape -> colour -> origin -> material -> purpose -> noun
It moves from judgement towards noun-bound properties. Use it for editing, not slot filling.
Sort wooden / a / brown / writing / beautiful / Indian / old / rectangular / small / desk: a determiner, beautiful opinion, small size, old age, rectangular shape, brown colour, Indian origin, wooden material, writing purpose, desk noun. The result is a beautiful small old rectangular brown Indian wooden writing desk; naturally, an elegant small wooden writing desk.
A black and white flag coordinates colours with and. In a beautiful old house, beautiful comments on the old house, so no comma is normally needed. Let meaning decide.

4. Form Positive, Comparative and Superlative Degrees Correctly
Set the group first. Patterns are tall, taller, tallest; big, bigger, biggest (double the final consonant); happy, happier, happiest (change consonant plus y); and careful, more careful, most careful. Irregulars include good, better, best; bad, worse, worst; little, less, least; and many/much, more, most. Check borderline two-syllable forms in a dictionary.
For P = 12 cm, Q = 18 cm, R = 24 cm:
Positive:
P is 12 cm long.Comparatives:
Q is 6 cm longer than P(18 - 12 = 6);R is 6 cm longer than Q(24 - 18 = 6).Superlative:
R is the longest of the three.Equality:
Q is not as long as R.Ratio:
R is twice as long as P(24/12 = 2).
For two: Of P and Q, Q is the longer rod. For three: Of P, Q and R, R is the longest. Separate as + adjective + as from comparative + than; reject more taller and most easiest.

5. Check the Comparison Group, the Preposition and the Noun Pair
Because Rohan is taller than any student in his class includes Rohan, add other: Rohan is taller than any other student in his class. Outside it, write Rohan is taller than any student in Class B.
Use senior to, junior to, superior to, inferior to and prefer X to Y. Write This method is superior to that method.
Compare like with like: The output of Machine A is higher than that of Machine B, not higher than Machine B. Write Of the two plans, Plan B is better, but Of Plans A, B and C, Plan C is the best.
6. Repair the Error-Spotting Patterns That Look Almost Right
Wrong | Corrected | Reason |
|---|---|---|
|
| Comparative already marked |
|
| Superlative already marked |
|
| Only two |
|
| Fixed preposition |
|
| Exclude Rohan from his own group |
|
| Opinion before colour before material |
In The lecture was boring, so the students were bored, boring is the cause and bored the experiencers. Correct The students were boring by the lecture to The students were bored by the lecture.
Scan the modifier's target, adjective versus adverb, comparison word, member count, than/to/as, group inclusion and adjective order, in that sequence.
7. See How Verbal-Aptitude Questions Change the Surface Form
Verbal-aptitude questions may ask you to identify an adjective or its type, reorder a modifier sequence, choose a comparison form, or repair an error. The SSC CGL English: A Section Strategy That Works shows how to fit grammar practice into a wider English-section plan.
Try this mini drill:
The committee found the proposal impractical:impracticalis an adjective and object complement, describingproposal.a / cotton / blue / lovely / shirt: a lovely blue cotton shirt, following opinion, colour, material.Of Anu and Beena, Anu is the ___ speaker:better, for two people. The revised paragraph has ___ errors:fewer, becauseerrorsis countable.Kavya is more careful than any student in her group: Kavya is more careful than any other student in her group, excluding Kavya.
Make 12 sentences: four role, three order, three comparison and two participial-adjective items. At 7/12, rewrite the five misses and retry after two days. At 10/12, revise the two missed rules before a new drill.
8. Keep the Short Version and Choose the Next Practice Step
An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.
Linking verbs can take adjective complements.
Opinion usually comes before physical description.
Comparative is normally for two, superlative for three or more.
Never double-mark a degree.
Compare like with like while checking
other,than,toandas.
Spend 5 minutes recreating the order strip, 5 minutes writing the P = 12 cm, Q = 18 cm, R = 24 cm comparisons and 10 minutes on a fresh 12-item drill. Continue through Aptitude Courses for Exams & Placements.
