Correct answer: D

Answer: 40%

Solution:

  • Assume quantities are 12 kg, 15 kg and 20 kg with costs 100, 80 and 60 per kg respectively.

  • Total cost price = 12×100 + 15×80 + 20×60 = 1200 + 1200 + 1200 = 3600.

  • Cost of the first two varieties = 1200 + 1200 = 2400. Selling them at 20% profit gives selling price = 1.2 × 2400 = 2880.

  • To have no overall gain or loss, total selling price must equal total cost price (3600). Therefore the selling price of the third variety = 3600 − 2880 = 720.

  • Cost price of the third variety = 20 × 60 = 1200. Loss on the third = 1200 − 720 = 480.

  • Percentage loss on the third = (480 / 1200) × 100% = 40%.

Hence the dealer suffered a 40% loss on the third variety.
