The provisions relating to Panchayats were added by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, which came into force on 24 April 1993. It inserted Part IX ('The Panchayats', Articles 243 to 243-O) and a new Eleventh Schedule listing 29 functional subjects for the Panchayats, thereby giving constitutional status to the Panchayati Raj system. (The companion 74th Amendment Act, 1992 did the same for urban local bodies — Municipalities — via Part IX-A and the Twelfth Schedule.)
