Concept

In the active voice the doer of the action (the agent) is the grammatical subject and the receiver of the action is the object. To turn a passive sentence into active, make the agent named after "by" the new subject, change the verb from its passive form (be + past participle) to the corresponding active form in the same tense, and move the passive subject into the object position. The meaning of the original sentence must be preserved exactly.

Application

1. Passive sentence: "I was invited to the party by him." The agent (doer) is "him", the receiver is "I", and the tense is simple past (was invited).

2. Make the agent the subject: "by him" becomes the subject "He".

3. Convert the verb to active, same tense: "was invited" (passive past) becomes "invited" (active simple past).

4. Move the old subject to object position: "I" becomes "me", and the rest of the sentence is kept: "to the party".

5. Active sentence: "He invited me to the party."

Contrast

• "He invited me to go to the party." adds "to go", which changes the meaning to inviting someone to travel/proceed rather than simply being invited.

• "I was instructed to go to the party." is still passive and replaces "invited" with "instructed", changing both voice and meaning.

• "I am told to go to the party." is passive, shifts the tense to present, and replaces the verb with "told", so it neither matches the voice nor the meaning.
