A diagnostic test is an assessment administered before or during instruction whose sole aim is to locate the specific points of difficulty, errors, and gaps in a learner's understanding. Unlike a test that grades achievement, it diagnoses the “where” and “why” of failure so that targeted remedial teaching can follow.

Application

Because its defining function is to pinpoint where a learner is struggling, a diagnostic test is conducted to identify the weaknesses of students. The teacher uses the results not to rank pupils but to plan individual remediation for the exact skills or concepts each pupil has not mastered.

Contrast with the near-misses

• “Identify gifted students” describes a talent- or aptitude-identification test, which screens for high ability rather than diagnosing difficulty.

• “Check the mental level of students” describes an intelligence/IQ test, which estimates general mental capacity, not the specific learning errors a diagnostic test targets.

• “Identify human values” describes a values or attitude assessment, which lies in the affective domain and is unrelated to locating learning difficulties.

Locating learning weaknesses for remedial action is therefore the defining object of a diagnostic test, which is exactly why it is conducted to identify the weaknesses of students.
