Which stage initiates the experiential learning cycle process?

Concept — Experiential learning theory treats learning as a four-stage recursive cycle in which knowledge is created by transforming experience. Two dimensions define it: a grasping dimension that runs from direct apprehension of an experience to abstract comprehension of it, and a transforming dimension that runs from inward reflection to outward action. Each stage works on material that the preceding stage supplies, and completing the fourth stage feeds fresh material back into the first.

Application — The stem asks which stage sets the cycle in motion, so trace the fixed order in which Kolb sets the four stages out:

1. Concrete experience — the learner engages a situation directly and gathers first-hand impressions.

2. Reflective observation — the learner reviews those impressions from different viewpoints.

Only concrete experience brings new material into the cycle from outside it, so the process is initiated by concrete experience through direct engagement.

One nuance is worth holding on to. Because the cycle is recursive, a learner already inside it can in practice re-join at a later stage — a teacher may open a lesson from a concept and move on to activity. That does not change what the stem asks: the stage from which Kolb sets the cycle out, and from which each fresh turn of it starts, is concrete experience.
