Which skill is primarily used when a student answers a question aloud in class?

Language ability is grouped into four skills along two axes: mode (oral vs written) and direction (receptive vs productive). Listening and Reading are receptive skills, used to take in language that someone else produced. Speaking and Writing are productive skills, used to produce language for others to receive.

When a student answers a question aloud, the student is producing spoken language in real time for the class to hear. That act of vocal production is exactly what the Speaking skill covers, so Speaking is the skill primarily exercised here.
