Concept: Modern basic education rests on the idea that learning works best when it is centred on the child, carried out through activity, and applied through projects. These are not rival philosophies to pick one from — they are three necessary parts of one integrated pedagogy: learner-centred planning decides what and how to teach, activity-based methods make learning experiential rather than rote, and project-based work lets the learner apply and consolidate what the activities taught.

Application: The three qualities offered here — student oriented, activity oriented, and project oriented — describe complementary facets of the same pedagogy rather than competing definitions. Basic education has to start from the learner's needs and pace, has to teach mainly through activity rather than lecture, and has to let the learner apply that learning through projects; dropping any one of the three leaves the description incomplete.

• Student oriented alone plans around the learner's needs and pace, but by itself it does not guarantee experiential, hands-on engagement.

• Activity oriented alone secures experiential engagement, but without learner-centred planning behind it the activities can be generic rather than suited to the learner.

• Project oriented alone lets learners apply knowledge, but it needs learner-centred design and activity-based groundwork to build the skills a project draws on.
