Correct answer: D

Concept

Interest is not treated as a fixed trait in educational psychology; it is a motivational state that develops through a fixed order of phases. The Four-Phase Model of Interest Development (Hidi and Renninger) holds that interest always begins as a situational state — sparked from outside the learner by some feature of the environment and initially short-lived.

With repeated, supported engagement that situational state becomes an individual disposition: an interest the learner carries, values and sustains without external prompting. The direction of development is therefore always from externally supported to self-sustaining, and it is cumulative — each phase presupposes the one before it.

Within each of the two levels the newly arising form precedes the stabilised form: a state must first be triggered before it can be maintained, and an interest must first emerge before it can become well developed.

Application

Placing each listed statement in its phase of the model:

  1. Phase 1 — Situational interest triggered (statement B): a feature of the learning environment, such as a surprising demonstration, a puzzle or a group activity, captures attention and produces a short-lived affective reaction.

  2. Phase 2 — Situational interest maintained (statement D): external support holds that attention over time through meaningful and personally relevant tasks, such as project work or cooperative group work.

  3. Phase 3 — Emerging individual interest (statement C): the learner begins to re-engage with the content voluntarily and to generate their own curiosity questions, while still benefiting from external support.

  4. Phase 4 — Well developed individual interest (statement A): the learner sustains long-term, self-driven re-engagement, has accumulated stored knowledge and value for the content, and persists through frustration and difficulty.

Cross-check

Checking the arrangement against the two constraints the model imposes:

  • Direction: development runs from externally supported to self-sustaining, so an arrangement that opens with well developed individual interest, such as A, D, B, C, starts at the endpoint of the model rather than at its beginning.

  • Dependency at the situational level: a state can only be maintained after it has been triggered, so any arrangement placing situational interest maintained before situational interest triggered, as in C, D, B, A and A, D, B, C, inverts that dependency.

  • Dependency at the individual level: an interest can only become well developed after it has emerged, and the model closes at the individual level, so C, B, A, D both opens above the situational phases that generate interest and closes on a situational phase.

Reading the four phases in developmental order therefore gives the sequence B, D, C, A.
