Concept — Experiential learning is a model of instruction in which knowledge is built from the learner’s own direct action on a situation instead of being received as a finished statement. Kolb’s cycle sets out its four stages — concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. Reflection is the stage that turns a single event into an idea the learner can carry to a new situation.

Application — A complex topic is one whose parts interact, so a purely verbal account hands the learner many terms with no observed link between them. When the learner acts on a real situation, those links appear as consequences that can be seen.
