Correct answer: A

Concept: In the Ghurid political order, a conquered province was governed not by a hereditary prince but by a bandagan — an elite Turkish military slave appointed as its provincial commander. When the sultan died leaving no son, authority over each territory tended to remain with the commander who was already administering it, and formal manumission and investiture by the Ghurid court followed later as confirmation rather than as the source of that authority.

Application: Muhammad Ghori was assassinated at Damyak on the Jhelum in AD 1206 and left no son. Since the Second Battle of Tarain (1192) his Indian conquests had been administered from Delhi and Lahore by his slave-general Qutbuddin Aibak. In 1206 the Turkish nobles at Lahore raised Aibak to power over those Indian territories, and he ruled from Lahore until his death in 1210; he is counted as the founder of the Mamluk (Slave) dynasty, the first dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. His formal manumission and investiture by the Ghurid sultan Ghiyasuddin Mahmud came only later, around 1208–09, and he used the titles Malik and Sipahsalar rather than Sultan and struck no coins in his own name. The wider Ghurid empire did not pass to a single heir: Tajuddin Yildiz held Ghazni and Nasiruddin Qubacha held Multan and Uch, so it was specifically the Indian domains that came to Aibak.

Cross-check: Placing every named ruler on the timeline shows which of them actually held command in AD 1206 and which belong to later reigns.

Ruler

Dynasty

Reign

Qutbuddin Aibak

Mamluk (Slave)

Result: Among the rulers named, authority over Muhammad Ghori's Indian domains in AD 1206 passed to Qutbuddin Aibak, the founder of the Mamluk (Slave) dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate.
