CONCEPT: The World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Energy Transition Index (ETI), prepared with Accenture, ranks countries each year on how well their energy systems balance three pillars: economic growth and development, environmental sustainability, and energy security and access, along with their readiness (regulatory, institutional and investment climate) to transition to a secure, sustainable and affordable energy system.

APPLICATION: In the edition released in April 2021 (using data through the prior year), 115 countries were benchmarked. India was placed 87th on that list, with an overall ETI score of about 53 -- a position driven mainly by weak environmental-sustainability performance even as its energy-access and security indicators improved.

CROSS-CHECK: This 87th position for the April-2021 edition represents a real year-on-year decline from India's 74th position in the immediately preceding (2020) edition -- WEF attributed this drop mainly to a fall in India's environmental-sustainability sub-score, even as its energy-access and security sub-scores held up. A shift of roughly a dozen places is what the report actually recorded, unlike the far larger swings that values such as 96 or 110 would imply, or the improvement a value like 67 would require. That confirms 87 as India's published rank.
