Concept. Bauxite is the chief ore of aluminium and it is a residual mineral: it forms by lateritisation, the prolonged chemical weathering of alumina-rich rocks under a hot, seasonally wet climate, which leaches silica away and leaves behind hydrated aluminium oxides. Workable bauxite is therefore confined to thick laterite caps that survive on old, well-drained plateau surfaces. A state’s share of national bauxite output depends on how extensive those laterite caps are and how heavily they are quarried — not on the state’s size or its overall mineral wealth.

Applying it here. The Indian Minerals Yearbook (IMYB) is published by the Indian Bureau of Mines and reports bauxite output state by state. In the IMYB 2023 tables, the laterite plateaux capping the Eastern Ghats — Panchpatmali in Koraput and Baphlimali in Rayagada — are quarried at a scale set by the alumina refineries built beside them, and Odisha records about 17.4 million tonnes of bauxite, roughly 73 per cent of all Indian production. No other state is in the same order of magnitude, so Odisha is the largest producer.
