A strait, channel, or passage is a narrow stretch of water that separates two landmasses while linking the larger seas on either side of it. Within the Andaman archipelago, several such water bodies mark the boundaries between individual islands and between the Andaman and Nicobar groups themselves.

Little Andaman sits at the southern end of the Andaman group. It is separated from Rutland Island, the southernmost extension of the Great Andaman landmass, by the Duncan Passage — the specific channel that divides Little Andaman from the rest of Great Andaman.

• Malacca Strait separates the Malay Peninsula from the island of Sumatra, linking the Andaman Sea to the South China Sea — a stretch of Southeast Asia well away from the Andaman archipelago.

• Ten Degree Channel runs close to the 10 degree North parallel and separates the Andaman Islands group from the Nicobar Islands group, a division further south than the one between Little Andaman and Great Andaman.

• Gulf of Mannar lies between the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu and the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka, on India's mainland coast rather than within the Andaman archipelago.

The Duncan Passage is therefore the water body that separates Little Andaman from Great Andaman.
