Concept

A sustainable river-rejuvenation model combines ecological restoration with lasting community participation and livelihood incentives.

When communities receive durable economic value from a clean and living river system, conservation can become self-sustaining rather than remain a one-time infrastructure effort.

Application

At Stockholm World Water Week 2022, the National Mission for Clean Ganga presented “Arth Ganga” as an economic river–people connection model for sustainable river rejuvenation. Its economic bridge is implemented through six broad intervention areas:

• natural farming along the Ganga corridor;

• reuse and monetisation of treated water and sludge;

• livelihood opportunities linked to the river;

• tourism and cultural-heritage promotion;

• public participation; and

• capacity-building and local institutions for river governance.

These linked interventions explain how economic activity and community stewardship can support the ecological goal of river rejuvenation.
