Each of the following questions consists of two sets of figures. Figures A, B, C and D constitute the Problem Set while figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 constitute the Answer Set. There is a definite relationship between figures A and B. Establish a similar relationship between figures C and D by selecting a suitable figure from the Answer Set that would replace the question mark (?) in fig. (D). Select a suitable figure from the Answer Figures that would replace the question mark (?). Problem Figures: Answer Figures:

Correct answer: C

In a figure-matrix (figure-analogy) question, the exact rotation and repositioning applied to each embedded element while moving from the first problem figure to the second is a fixed rule; the same rule must be reapplied, unchanged, to the third problem figure to construct the missing fourth one.

From the first problem figure to the second, each tracked element changes as follows:

  1. The arrow-and-cross marker rotates 135° anticlockwise: it turns from pointing straight down to pointing to the upper-right, and its separate dot swings from just above the crossing point to just below it.

  2. The ball-and-stem connector rotates 90° clockwise and relocates toward the lower-right of its figure: it turns from pointing straight up to pointing to the right (rounded end on the left, tail trailing right).

  3. The four-sided shape shifts toward the centre of its figure.

Reapplying the identical rule to the third problem figure:

  1. Its marker (pointing left, dot above-right of the crossing point) turns the same 135° anticlockwise to point to the lower-right, with its dot swinging round to sit just left of the crossing point.

  2. Its connector (pointing downward) turns the same 90° clockwise to point left, so its rounded end settles on the right with the tail trailing left.

  3. Its four-sided shape shifts toward the centre, exactly as before.

Only the answer figure that shows all of these updated states together — marker pointing to the lower-right with its dot on the left, connector's rounded end on the right with the tail trailing left, and the four-sided shape centred — completes the pattern. That is the figure labelled 3, so 3 is the answer. Every other answer figure freezes at least the marker or the connector at an earlier stage: some repeat the second problem figure's marker and connector without any further change, and some leave the marker's dot at a resting point the rotation does not actually reach.
