Concept

To draw a Venn diagram, decide for each pair of classes whether one class is wholly contained in another (a sub-class), whether the two classes partly overlap (some shared members), or whether they are disjoint (no shared members). A class that is entirely a kind of another is drawn as a smaller circle fully inside the larger one; two groups with no common members are drawn as separate, non-touching circles.

Applying it here

  • Crocodiles are a kind of reptile, so the Crocodiles circle lies entirely inside the Reptiles circle.

  • Lizards are a kind of reptile, so the Lizards circle also lies entirely inside the Reptiles circle.

  • No animal is both a crocodile and a lizard, so these two inner circles are separate and do not overlap.

Therefore the correct picture is one large circle (Reptiles) containing two smaller circles (Crocodiles and Lizards) that do not touch each other.

Why the other shapes fail

  • When the three circles only partly cross one another, every circle has a part outside the others, so none of them can fully contain the other two; that cannot show two groups held completely inside a third class.

  • When all three circles share one common region, the picture claims members belonging to all three classes at once, which a simple kind-of relationship does not have.

  • When one circle is drawn entirely outside the large circle, that group is excluded from the larger class, but here both smaller groups must lie within it.
